Herausgegeben wurde die Bibel von dem bedeutenden Exeget und Ordenshistoriker Thomas Aquinas Erhard (1675-1743). Der Benediktiner in Wessobrunn war auch Initiator der Wessobrunner Bibelkonkordanz. - Die auch im Format etwas abweichenden Bände berieben u. bestoßen (Ecken u. tlw. Kapitale m. Fehlstellen). Double columns of 50 lines of small Gothic type: 6:65G and larger heading type: 7:130G, rubricated in red and capitals touched in red, large initials alternately painted red and blue over printed guide letters. Original beveled wooden boards, backed in a 19th-century calf spine with four raised bands in five compartments, edges speckled red, contained in custom cloth case; (repaired closed tear to l3, corner of Q8 renewed, final leaf with repaired closed tear starting from gutter, minor marginal dampstaining, a few stray spots, a few closed marginal tears, some of which repaired, lacking clasps, vellum leaves somewhat darkened; overall very good compact early bible, complete and enhanced with dense early modern inscriptions on flyleaves). The four original vellum flyleaves, bound three in the front and one at the rear, have extensive contemporary and later annotations detailing names of owners in numerous hands, written in Latin and French, and two whimsical drawings of heraldic shields. At its earliest known location, the bible resided in Luxembourg ("Lutzenberg"). One prominent name "Hiegaerts" seems to be tied to the historic region of Flanders, and variously dated in the 17th century. Archival descriptions expertly detail further provenance until about the year 1850, when the bible was likely sold with Thomas Baker, bookseller of London. Franz, or Franciscus, Renner (14501486), a German printer from Heilbronn, published this small quarto of the Latin Vulgate in Venice in 1483, it was the fifth and final edition of Renner's incunable Bibles from that city. An earlier folio edition of 1475, which he produced with Nicolaus de Frankfordia (fl. 14731516), preceded it, as did editions in 1476, 1478, 1480, and 1482. The 1475 edition was notably the first Bible printed in Venice within the burgeoning print industry. By 1483, Renner was printing works independently and had printed more than 40 incunabula, five of these Latin Bibles. With this quarto edition, the last edition he made in Venice, Renner pioneered a more convenient design for people, i.e. educated clerics, to read the Bible. Although this Bible originated in Venice, early inscriptions dating to about 1500 locate the book's ownership as far as northern Europe, probably first in Luxembourg and in the possession of a cleric. This copy of Renner's important biblical production is significant not only for leading the way in format and portability, and for being a prime example of early printed biblical commentary from Venice, but for the amazing survival of its original vellum wrappers that record over 300 years of ownership marks. The leaves are a veritable treasure-trove of readership evidence throughout the early modern period. ISTC ib00578000.

Folio (277 x 416 mm). Single leaf. Illuminated manuscript on vellum. Two columns of gothic script with large illuminated capital, large blue initial, rubricated titles and sections, and inked marginal decoration. Bound into modern cream cloth (320 x 418 mm). Overflowing with gold, King Cyrus directs the construction of the Temple of Jerusalem in this elaborately illuminated initial from the leaf of a Latin Bible, ca. 1507. The leaf comprises Ezra 1:1-2:62, Chapter Two being preceded by a four-line rubric from Bede's commentary on Nehemiah and Ezra (Migne, PL , XCI, 1850, col. 817). It is dominated by this flamboyant and unusual scene of Cyrus flanked by councillors, and features four more roundels of gilt in the margins (a little inked heron perches upon one) with distinctive inked marginal decorations of the late 15th and early 16th century. The product of skilled craftspeople, both the illuminated scene and the gothic bookhand are very fine, on high quality vellum. - Variously attributed to Austria or Germany (Augsburg in particular), this leaf is generally accepted to be the product of a Cistercian or Carthusian house, based on the scribal use of the punctus flexus. Remarkably, this leaf can also be narrowly dated: originally part of a multi-volume Latin Bible, the first volume, containing Genesis-Ruth, survives intact (Baltimore, Walters Art Museum, MS W.805), and includes a scribal date of 1507. When catalogued in the Schøyen Collection, it was tentatively suggested that this Bible, and thus this leaf, could be sourced to Augsburg, and specifically to St. Ulrich's and St. Afra's Abbey. This corresponds to the 1987 Ferrini catalogue's attribution of this leaf to Augsburg; Ferrini also drew comparisons to the work of the illuminator Leonhard Beck and scribe Leonhard Wagner. Stylistically, its palette of pinks, greens, blues, and stocky but animated figures does suggest an origin in the German-speaking principalities at the dawn of the 16th century. - Faint dampstain in upper fore-edge margin; similar dampstain on upper gutter margin with small closed tear and very subtle repairs; in excellent condition, with particularly bright and un-rubbed illumination. - I. In the early 18th century, this volume was in the collection of Gallus Winckelmann (16951757), a Benedictine monk and scholar active at Banz Abbey in Bavaria; his note on AA1: "Coemit ad usum F. Gallus Winckellmann Prof[essus] Banth[ensis]). The early-19th century signature of "Daniel Kendig" on front endpaper above perhaps an earlier inscription noting Lyra's commentaries. Then in England, the front pastedown with the mid-19th century bookplate of Joseph M. Lybrand (rector of Saint Paul's Church, Camden) and America with the early-20th century labels of the Philadelphia Divinity School (their bookplate and perforated stamp, formerly collection number 4436). This volume is part three of four in the second Koberger edition of the Bible printed in Nuremberg in 148687; parts one through three were undated with the fourth part dated 3 December 1487. This second edition was preceded by bible set printed by Anton Koberger in 1485. It was a monumental production incorporating the biblical commentary of medieval Franciscan scholar Nicholas de Lyra (12701349), with theadditions of Paul of Burgos (ca. 13511435) and responses to the latter by Matthias Doering (d. 1469), as well as the commentary of William the Breton (ca. 11651225) on the Prologues of Jerome. Part 3 of the set contained the books of the Major and Minor Prophets, along with the books of the Lamentations and Maccabees. Nicholas de Lyra's biblical gloss, or 'Postilla,' encouraged much scholarly discourse throughout the Middle Ages and was frequently reprinted into the 16th century. This edition includes the famous woodcut of Ezekiel's Vision and the various views and implements of Solomon's Temple.

Miniscule gothic bookhand in blank ink; emphases in red, page captions, chapter numbers, rubrication and Lombardic initials in red and blue, numerous red and blue initials with elaborate penwork in complementary colours. 16th century auburn morocco on four raised double bands, gilt spine ornaments, both covers with fleurons to corners, multiple rules along the edges, and gilt coat of arms (quarterly, a goat rampant and a sheaf of corn; inescutcheon a lion rampant; not in Olivier), dated "1587" on upper cover. 4 modern cloth ties. Stored in custom-made half morocco case. A beautiful, complete medieval Bible written in a miniscule bookhand on extremely delicate vellum, probably copied in England or commissioned from there. As is common, the Bible is prefaced with the epistle of St Jerome to Paulinus (53: "Frater Ambrosius [.] moriturum", fols. 1r-3r), followed by Jerome's prologue to the Pentateuch ("Desiderii mei [.] in latinum eos transferre sermonem. Amen"); the text of Genesis begins on fol. 4r. The Second Book of Kings is followed by the Book of Isaiah (139v) and the Prophets; on fol. 227r follow the Book of Job and the Poetic Books; 287v ff. contain the Books of Chronicles and the historical books to 2 Maccabees; the New Testament begins on fol. 351r. - Some page headings and penwork flourishes slightly trimmed, still an uncommonly wide-margined specimen. Occasional flaws in the vellum were carefully avoided by the scribes. The margins contain numerous contemporary and later annotations in what appear to be four different hands (a number of which are also very slightly trimmed), some exceedingly delicate: one 8-line annotation measures no more than 10 mm! The early marginalia would appear to be in a 15th century English hand; at least one (at the lower edge of fol. 41v) is an extract from the Psalm commentary of the Yorkshire mystic Richard Rolle (d. 1349). Furthermore, the plummet lines along many of the earliest marginalia, but also the order of the Old Testament Books, uncommon for a French Bible, suggest an English provenance. As the continental hands of the later annotations show, the Bible must have reached France or Germany in the later 15th century. - Professional repairs to spine-ends and one corner of the fine Renaissance binding. First and last quires a little browned and dust-stained, very slight worming to beginning, occasional, largely insignificant waterstains to margins, a few edge cuts and cut-out sections in the blank margins. An old edge repair to fol. 155, fols. 310-323 as well as a few others more strongly browned and wrinkled, but generally in fine state of preservation. - Karl & Faber, sale 81 (1962), no. 3.

Koberger's third Latin Bible, printed with the same types as the second: in the splendid Gothic typeface which Koberger used exclusively for his Bibles; at the same time, the earliest type he is known to have used (cf. Klemm, Bibliogr. Mus., 722). The initial on fol. i shows the evangelist Mark with the lion; the tendril decoration reaches from the upper edge (slightly trimmed) to the lower one, ending in a coat of arms bearing the monogram "S-A-B". The second historiated initial on fol. iiii shows the Fall from Grace (Adam and Eve in paradise, with the apple tree and the serpent in the centre); here, the tendrils reach as far as the lower third of the page and also end in a coat of arms. Very exactingly rubricated throughout; signed at the end: "91 Jo fec". Several handwritten ownerships to fol. A1r, some contemporary, others as late as 1876: the name and printed bookplate of "C. R. Earley, Ridgway, Pa." (1823-98). Several manuscript marginalia. Some slight browning to the gutter of the first few leaves, staining to upper edge of fol. i. B. Raimondi. The Arabic text is printed in Robert Granjon's famous large fount, generally considered the first satisfactory Arabic printing type. The first Gospel printing in the interlinear Arabic and Latin version, prepared at the same time and printed by the same press as the first Arabic-only Gospel. These were the first works ever produced by Ferdinando de' Medici's "Medicea" press, founded by Pope Gregory XIII to spread the word of Christ in the Orient. Supervised by the able scholar Giovambattista Raimondi (1536-1614), its strength lay in oriental, especially Arabic, printing. After Raimondi's death, the press relocated to Florence. - The Arabic text is printed in Robert Granjon's famous large fount, generally considered the first satisfactory Arabic printing type; as all early printed editions of the Arabic Gospels, it is based on the Alexandrian Vulgate (cf. Darlow/M. 1636). The Latin version is by Leonardo Sionita. The work begins with page 9, without a title-page or any preliminary matter at all: "the intended prefatory matter was apparently never published" (Darlow/M.); these first eight pages were not supplied until the 1619 re-issue. The present copy lacks the first five leaves and eight leaves at the end, all of which have been supplied in Latin and Arabic manuscript by an 18th century hand.
