Translated by Florence A. Gragg. 10 plates the fresco cycle, in ten scenes , of the life of Aeneas Sylius Piccolomini by Pinturicchio, painted between 1502 and 1509 in the Cathedral at Sienna. Pope Pius II was born Enea Silvio Bartolomeo Piccolomini (18 October 1405 - 14 August 1464), was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 19 August 1458 to his death. He became Bishop of Trieste in 1447, Bishop of Siena in 1450, and a cardinal in 1456. He was a Renaissance humanist with an international reputation. Condición: Good. Title and colophon on the last leaf (245a): Pij ij pontificis maximi cui ante summum episcopatumprimum quidem imperiali secreta rio: tandem episcopo deinde cardinali senensi. Eneas siluius nomen erat, familiäres epistole ad diuersos in quadruplici vite eius statu trans misse: Impensis Antonij Koburger Nure[m]berge, imp[re]sse finiu[n]t xvj k[a]l[enda]s Octobris [16 Sept.] anno salutis Christiane [et] c[etera] Mcccclxxxvi [1486] Folio, a printed work consisting of 245 unnumbered leaves with ornate Gothic letters, a single-column text block and neatly painted red initials. The leaves are marked with neither signatures, nor catchwords, nor numerals. Throughout the pages of the book, there is contemporary handwritten marginalization. The author is Pope Pius II, born Enea Silvio Bartolomeo Piccolomini, head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from August 19, 1458, until his death. Writing under the name Aeneas Silvius, he was a diplomat and orator, as well as private secretary to Antipope Felix V, then Emperor Frederick III, and subsequently Pope Eugenius IV. As Pope, he was the ideal of the age of humanism. A true Renaissance polymath, a patron of archaeology and the arts, and alongside all this, a committed devotee of human life. The book contains the correspondence of Aeneas Sylvius in a total of 432 epistles. It has no separate title page, but rather begins immediately with the table of contents under the inscription: »Numerus et ordo epistolarum in hoc opere contentarum«. In this table of contents, some 30 entries regarding Hungarians or Hungary can be read: »De rege Ladislao. (fol. 52) »Bello thurcorum et vngarorum rex polouie et cardinalis. (fol. 63) »Nouitates vngarie et de conventu nurembergensi. (fol. 78) »Hortatur legatos regni vngarie vt Ladislaum absque conditione regein recipiant. (fol. 81) »Ungari spreto Ladislao regni herede verö regis polonie. (fol. 93) »De rebus vngarie et ecclesie auizamentum. On the 21st leaf, minimal loss; the 107th leaf is repaired; on one or two, a smaller stain. In contemporary, repaired parchment binding, with new endpapers and two cord tie loops. A very beautiful copy, an extremely rare, valuable incunable with Hungarian references. Folio (12 3/8 x 8 inches). Woodcut printer's device on title-page, 18 woodcut maps from Muenster's "Cosmographia", woodcut initials (contemporary ownership inscription excised from title-page, one or two repaired marginal tears occasionally crossing the text). Contemporary limp vellum decorated in blind, yapp fore-edges (dust-soiled). Provenance: Some contemporary marginal annotations; ownership inscription and notes of Dr. David Laird, M.D. on the front paste-down. Pope Pius II (1458-1464) travelled widely and was a prolific writer; two incomplete editions of his work were published by Henrich Petri in 1551 and this edition in 1571 which includes accounts of his many travels and in particular his secret mission to Scotland with Cardinal Albergati "The voyage was very tempestuous and Piccolomini vowed to walk, if spared, barefoot from the port of arrival to the nearest shrine of Our Lady. He landed at Dunbar and, from the pilgrimage of ten miles through ice and snow to the sanctuary of Whitekirk, he contracted the gout from which he suffered for the rest of his life" (Catholic Encyclopedia). Two of his most important works were either entirely or partly written during his period as Pope: "his geographical and ethnographical description of Asia and Europe; and his "Memoirs", which are the only autobiography left us by a pope. They are entitled "Pii II Commentarii rerum memorabilium, quae temporibus suis contigerunt". Earlier in his life he had written, besides "Eurialus and Lucretia" and the recently discovered comedy "Chrysis", the followinghistorical works: "Libellus dialogorum de generalis concilii auctoritate et gestis Basileensium"; "Commentarius de rebus Basileae gestis"; "Historia rerum Frederici III imperatoris"; "Historia Bohemica" (Catholic Encyclopedia). - Einbanddeckel etw. geworfen.
