He developed an early interest in Natural History, encouraged by his family. In 1924 he published his first book "An Account of the Natural History of New England and of Nova Scotia and Lower Canada ." In the Preface of this book, he mentions "at as soon a time as is convenient, I intend to prepare a catalogue, with the technical names of each properly applied, after the fashion of Linnaeus", which is one of the Typescripts being offered here. It remained unpublished, as his Zoological knowledge was very outdated, and he was opposed to the changes to genus names that had occurred over the two Centuries since the time of Linnaeus. Here within is found **57 single sided typed sheets with hand corrections, being The Scientific Names of America-Found In "An Account of the Natural History of New England". Most sheets measuring 8 1/2 by 13 inches, housed within a stiff German folder. The next unpublished book written by Curtiss is **"A Short Account of Brazil, From Letters of One Who Has Been There". It begins with "The people of Brazil, for the most part, can neither read nor write, and are very stupid, lazy and dirty. Most of the houses are full of many unwholesome guests, large cockroaches (Blatta Americana), and small lizards, but these are hardly noticed. My correspondent was dining with a very well-to-do Spanish couple, and was seated opposite the buffet. All of a sudden she heard a noise above the buffet, and lifting her eyes, what should she see . [One can see why Curtiss was drawn to the world of Natural History, as he seems to lack any compassion for human beings]. Here we find 81 pages, as above, with handwritten notes, discussing Flora, Fauna, Mammals, Birds, Insects and Fish. Added to this, are the follow 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheets, *29pp further discussing fish, *22pp on various fish, *39pp discussing insects, bed bugs, scorpion, crabs and more, *28pp discussing sharks and additional fish. All housed in a stiff folder. **And lastly "An Account of Alaska, of the Aleutian and Pribiloff Islands and of Contingent Country. Of the People, Their Manners and Customs, But Especially of Beasts, Birds and Fishes, with the More Prominent Insects. To Which is Added An Account of Insects of the North-eastern States by the Same. With Much of Their Habits, Helpful or Harmful, of Their Metamorphoses, etc." Unpainated, 35pp single sided typed sheets, with most measuring 8-1/2 by 13 1/2 inches, includes handwritten annotations by the author, housed in a stiff folder. In 1934 Curtiss went to Tahiti, where he stayed for five years, marrying a local girl, and helping to support the local community. In 1938, his only other published book, "A Short Zoology of Tahiti in the Society Islands" was published on a home visit to the United States. HIS PAPERS AND MANUSCRIPT AUTOBIOGRAPHY ARE RETAINED IN THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION.
