Añadir al carritoPamphlet. Condición: Near fine. Dinner Program. Twelvemo, [6pp]. Printed wrappers. Mounting tape remnant on front cover of program. Housed in a custom blue cloth folder, title stamped in gilt over red morocco label on front panel. Signed by William H. Taft on the frontispiece portrait. At the Worcester Board of Trade's Thirtieth… Annual Banquet, Secretary of War William H. Taft addressed a crowd of 600 people. He spoke about conditions in the Philippine Islands. Taft argued that Congress should reduce tariffs to bring the Philippines into closer relation with the United States. He contrasted American policy with British colonial rule, saying the United States was trying to teach Filipinos self-government rather than govern them permanently from Washington. He also discussed a coming congressional trip to the islands and hoped it would increase public interest and understanding. Signed by Secretary of War William H. Taft, the Dinner Program for the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Worcester Board of Trade, held on April 1st, 1905. (ilustrador). Signed.

Añadir al carritoBoth items are uniform in appearance, each 3pp., foolscap 8vo, with the texts printed in copperplate from engraved plates. Both in fair condition, on aged paper, and with loss along the spine where the two have been disbound. The reason for the printing of the two documents, as is clear from the text, is for their circulation to… various banks. Baring's Letter: Facsimile signature reads '(signed) F. T. Baring', and is uniform with the copperplate text. The reason for the printing of the letter is for copies to be enclosed with Wickham's. Baring writes to Wickham as chairman of the committee 'to inquire into the causes of the recent Commercial distress and how far it has been affected by the Laws for regulating the issue of Bank Notes payable to bearer on demand'. He points out that 'The Committee is a Committee of Secrecy.' He is writing to instruct Wickham to provide the committee with a report, as the 'returns in your office will I apprehend enable you to furnish this information so far as regards the later years, but for the time previous to the passing of the 8 & 9 Victoria C.38, you have no means of giving this return, and the information can only be obtained from the Scotch Banks.' He continues in his instructions, enjoining secrecy. Wickham's Letter: Addressed to 'Gentlemen', and a circular intended for distribution to banks. In addition to his autograph signature it contains a minor emendation by him, with the address to 'The Govr & Compy of the Bank of Scotland'. He begins by stating that he is enclosing Baring's letter, and that he requests 'that you will in pursuance of the directions contained in that Letter, prepare and forward to me at this office with as little delay as possible, An Account of the aggregate amount of your notes in circulation, and of the aggregate amount of Gold Coin and Bullion held by you on the last day of the second week of February and November, [added by Wickham: 'respectively'] in the years 1842, 1843, 1844, 1845, 1846, & 1847'. Note: see Hansard etc and articles such as "The Gold Standard and the Bank of England in the Crisis of 1847" by Rudiger Dornbusch, Jacob A. Frenkel.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Fine. - A richly hued 4-1/2 inch high oval woodburytype portrait of Lord Carlingford mounted onto 11-1/4 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide stiff cream stock. A light gray printed decorative frame highlights the image. The subject's name is printed in the same light gray centered within the lower half of the sheet. "Lock an…d Whitfield" and "Woodbury Process" are printed at left and right along the lower edge. Near fine. The British Liberal politician Chichester Parkinson-Fortescue, 1st Baron Carlingford (1823-1898) was elected to Parliament for Louth in 1847. He served as Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies under Palmerston and was admitted to the Privy Council in 1864. Appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland under Lord Russell and subsequently under William Ewart Gladstone, he came to hold a seat in Gladstone's cabinet and was admitted to the Irish Privy Council. He also later served as President of the Board of Trade. Appointed Knight of the Order of St. Patrick in 1882, he was an active supporter on Irish questions in his early years but later parted with Gladstone on the question of Irish Home Rule. Both a printing process and the print which it produces, Woodburytype was invented and patented by Walter B. Woodbury in 1864. A photomechanical process, Woodbury type prints are made from exposing a dichromate-sensitized sheet of gelatin to UV light shining through a photographic negative. Each area of the gelatin hardens to a depth in proportion to the amount of exposure to the light before it is then soaked in warm water. The relief image is then pressed onto a sheet of lead to create an intaglio metal printing plate.
