~. *** ORIGINAL-HANDSCHRIFT (hier ein kurzer Auszug): ''Am 13ten Februar, Nachmittags gegen 4 Uhr durchflog plötzlich eine erschütternde Trauerbotschaft die alte Lagunenstadt am adriatischen Meere. Alles war in Bewegung, alles eilte, wie von einer unsichtbaren Macht getrieben. Alle Stimmen waren gedämpft, alle Augen gesenkt! So ging es fort und fort bis in die späte Nacht, und auch da noch konnte 'Venedig' nicht zur Ruhe kommen. Dann, als zwischen schwer dahinziehenden Wolken der Mond sein blasses Licht über die Stadt ergoß, riefen die Geister längst entflohener, mächtiger Geschlechter es sich zu; >Richard Wagner ist gestorben.< - Richard Wagner, der große Dramatiker, war Nachmittags gegen 3 Uhr entschlafen. Noch am Morgen verließ er heiter den Pallazzo Vendramm, kehrte ebenso heiter zurück, und begab sich in sein Arbeitszimmer. Als zur Mittagszeit sich Frau Wagner mit ihren Kindern und dem anwesenden Freund der Familie: Joukovsky in das Speisezimmer begab, ließ sie ihren Mann durch einen Diener benachrichtigen. Kurz nachher eilte der Diener herein und meldete, daß Herr Wagner wieder einen krampfartigen Anfall bekommen habe. [Es] wurde augenblicklich nach dem Arzte geschickt und Frau Wagner eilte nach dem Arbeitszimmer, während die Kinder und der Freund zurückblieben. Als endlich der Arzt kam, wagten sie es vorsichtig einzutreten. Ein tieferschütternder Anblick bot sich dar. Auf einem kleinen Sopha etwas zurückgelehnt, saß der gewaltige Mann, der mit unendlicher Geisteskraft so oft sein Jahrhundert in die Schranken gefordert, wie schlafend. Vor ihm seine Gattin, starr, regungslos, bleich wie er, seine Hände fest umklammert. Der Arzt konnte nur den plötzlich eingetretenen Tod konstatieren. Alle Versuche, die Frau von der Leiche zu entfernen waren vergeblich. Geistesentrückt, saß sie da, die ganze Nacht, den ganzen nächsten Tag. Man trug sie zu Bett, doch bald darauf fand man sie wieder bei dem Todten. Sie hatte sich ihr schönes, mächtiges Haar, welches der Verstorbene so sehr liebte, abgeschnitten und ihm auf die Brust gelegt. - Als die sich so oft bewährten Freunde von Bayreuth herbeigeeilt kamen wurde die Leiche des großen Mannes eingesargt. Bedeckt mit tausenden von Kränzen und Blumen brachte man den Sarg nach der Bahn, wo sich große Massen Volkes eingefunden hatten, um in ernstem Schweigen, sich von dem Todten zu verabschieden. Vom König von Bayern waren trauerfestlich geschmückte Wagen gesendet worden, und in diesen fuhren die von wenigen Freunden treu bewachte Leiche, und die Familie, über München nach Bayreuth. Alle größeren Städte, welche der Trauerzug zu passieren hatte, bezeugten durch Vertreter dem Todten die letzte Ehre. Die Kinder, und die immer noch wie leblos erscheinende Gattin, wurden von Herrn und Frau Gross, von Joukovsky und Hans Richter nach Wahnfried gebracht. In der Nacht und am nächstfolgenden Vormittag trafen von allen Seiten tausende an Menschen ein, um dem Begräbniß beizuwohnen. Von allen Häusern wehten schwarze Fahnen, alle Laternen brannten. Unter den mächtigen Klängen des Trauermarsches aus der Götterdämmerung wurde der Sarg aus dem Wagen, auf eine Estrade getragen. Dort sprachen Bürgermeister Munker, und Banquier Feustel, ergreifende Worte. Gleich darauf ordnete sich der Trauerzug, und setzte sich in Bewegung, hohe Wagen, auf welchen ein Theil der schönsten und größten Kränze angebracht waren, die Geistlichkeit, und der große Leichenwagen mit dem Sarge. Dicht hinter dem Wagen folgten die Vertreter des Königs von Bayern und die nächsten Freunde des Verstorbenen. Nun schlossen sich Deputationen und Künstler, das Königliche Offizierkorps, königliche Beamte, Vereine der Stadt Bayreuth, etc. etc. etc. an. Die Straßen und Plätze waren überfüllt mit Menschen, und langsam bewegte sich der Trauerzug nach der Villa Wahnfried. An dem Thore angelangt hielten die Wagen, der Sarg wurde herabgestellt auf eine Bahre, welche die nächsten Freunde langsam nach der Gruft trugen. An der Gruft lagen die zwei schönen, mächtig großen Hunde Wagners. Die Bahre mit dem Sarg wurde niedergestellt. Als alle den Garten verlassen hatten, wankte Frau Wagner gestützt von ihren Kindern nach der Gruft. Nach einer langen feierlichen Stille während welcher, die gänzlich gebrochene Frau, mit den Kindern den Sarg umkreiste, erfaßten letztere mit einigen Bürgern den Sarg, und trugen denselben in die Gruft. The first six issues of this rocketry journal, 15 Juli-15 Dezember 1927, plus the Januar-Juni 1927 Ergänzungsheft. Among the signed articles published in these issues are contributions by Hans Grimm and Hermann Oberth, but the majority are by Max Valier. The Juli-Dezember issues contain the first printing of "Die Fahrt ins All. Eine kosmische Phantasie," a six-part science fiction story by Valier, later published separately in book form as AUF KÜHNER FAHRT ZUM MARS. EINE KOSMISCHE PHANTASIE (1927). "The Society for Space Ship Travel, or Verien für Raumschiffahrt -- the VfR, and afterwards more popularly called the German Rocket Society -- was born on July 5, 1927" (Winter, p. 35). DIE RAKETE is commonly considered to be the first rocket journal but, in fact, it "had a predecessor, a magazine printed six months before the VfR came into being, the DEUTSCHE JUGEND-ZEITUNG (German Youth Journal). The lead article was, interestingly, 'Der Flug zum Monde, seine astronmischen und technischen Grundlagen' ('The Flight to the Moon, its Astronomical Basis'). The fourth issue contained a subtitle change: 'VEREINIGT MIT DER ZEITSCHRIFT "DIE RAKETE"' (Combined with the journal "Die Rakete"). The journal ceased publication shortly thereafter" (Winter, p. 37). When the VfR was founded a new DIE RAKETE appeared, with page numbering continued from the earlier journal, a technical supplement to it, and an index to the contents of both journals (pages 3-4 of the preliminaries).
