folded broadsheet. 17.5 x 23.5 inches. folded broadsheet. Printed in black on one side only. A facsimile of the first newspaper page composed on a commercial Linotype. Although printed by offset lithography, the parts composed by the Linotype can still be visibly distinguished from the hand-set type because of a single wrong-font bold face apostrophe. This appears in only three of the stories (see Schlesinger: Ottmar Mergenthaler, Inventor of the Linotype, pp. 113-116). MERGENTHALER, OTTMAR (ilustrador).…

cloth. 8vo. cloth. xviii, 125+(1) pages. First edition thus. Near fine. Ottmar Mergenthaler, the world-famous inventor of the Linotype machine, was dying of tuberculosis in 1898. Too weak to hold a pen the inventor, whose breakthrough had made possible cheaper and larger newspapers and books, still burned with a desire to tell his life's story. Death would soon take this man who had made it possible for everybody to read more of everything. New research by Carl Schlesinger about the first matrices used in the 1886 Blower Linotype has been included. For a hundred years, scholars presumed these mats were made from steel alphabet punches which had been cut by hand. Schlesinger offers proof that the matrices were really made with inserted electrotype molds. These had been copied from existing hand type to conceal the appearance of Linotype printing. Illustrated. Mergenthaler, Ottmar (ilustrador).…

Pp. xviii+125(last colophon, advertisements), frontispiece portrait, text illustrations; narrow cr. 4to; green art. leather, lettered in gilt; dust wrapper; Oak Knoll Press, New Castle, DE., 1992. Third printing. Oak Knoll Series on the History of the Book. *Mergenthaler completed his autobiography (which was privately printed and given to friends), shortly before his death in 1899. This edition reprints the original work, and adds to it considerably, revealing amongst other new information that Mergenthaler's first circulating type-matrices (which were the key to his machine's success) were made by an entirely different process than historians had assumed for the past 100 years. Inserted in a pocket on the lower pastedown is a full-size copy (folded) of the first commercially used Linotype lines, which appeared in the New York Daily Tribune, July 3, 1886.…
