It is common knowledge that the travel accounts given by foreign travellers in India make a considerable body of historical material which can furnish to us with many starting facts and conclusions about the past. Most of these travel accounts, which are available in the form of memoirs, travelogues and diaries, were written by the foreign travellers, who were a mixed lot, comprising colonial administrators, intellectuals, adventurers, hunters, artists, poets and missionaries. Surprisingly, the majority of these travellers had shown a special interest in the Indian royalty and were fascinated by the grandeur and magnificence of royal courts, the lifestyle of women and love of art. Their accounts gave a fairly good idea of social life in royal states, their festivals, religion, customs, rites and ceremonies.
