Original pen & ink drawing heightened with white on thin board. Hand-written "Hans Busk" label applied to lower left. Possibly executed for reproduction as a print. Although not identified as such, the drawing is of Hans Busk's Schooner Yacht "Lady Busk", named after Busk's Step-Grandmother, the widow of Sir Wadsworth Busk, Attorney-General of the Isle of Man. The yacht was built and fitted with auxiliary engines (801 HP) by Messrs Henry Tipping of Portsmouth in about 1850. I have found two prints of the "Lady Busk", both after a similar drawing by Busk, one a hand-coloured lithograph by the English marine artist Thomas Goldsworth Dutton (1820~1891) printed in about 1860 (please see images). Drawing measures 15.5 x 24 cm. Some discolouration & marking to image & score/cut marks to surface around image but also intersecting label and left side of image (please see images). --- Hans Busk the younger (1815~1882) was one of the originators of the "Volunteers". He was educated at King's College London and Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating with a BA in 1839 and an M.A. in 1844. He was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1841. While still an undergraduate, he lobbied the Government to form rifle clubs for defence against invasion, and created a model rifle club at Cambridge in 1837. This grew into the "Volunteers" movement, which he helped to pioneer. He served with the 1st Middlesex Rifle Volunteers and with the Royal Victoria Rifle Club, and wrote a number of practical manuals regarding rifle training. He was styled "Captain Busk". He also took an interest in designing yachts and lifeboats, and advocated the installation of lifeboat stations and fitted out a 'Life-Ship' at his own expense. He was a gastronome, and founded the School of Cookery at South Kensington and also a keen artist with works by him appearing at auction now and again. In 1873 he became a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He was the son of the Welsh poet and high sheriff of Radnorshire Hans Busk the elder (1772~1862). His siblings included Frances Rosalie, Julia Clara Pitt Byrne and Rachel Harriette Busk; another sister, Maria Georgiana, married Sir Robert Loder, 1st Baronet.
