From a picture by Sir G. Kneller . Engraved by T.A. Dean. Lord Chancellor Somers, or John Somers, 1st Baron Somers (1651 1716), was a distinguished English jurist and statesman whose influence spanned the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Renowned for his legal acumen, Somers rose to prominence as a barrister, establishing a reputation for eloquence and expertise. His pivotal role in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, supporting William III and Mary II, contributed to the establishment of constitutional monarchy in England. As a key architect of the constitutional settlement, Somers played a crucial role in drafting the English Bill of Rights in 1689, a landmark document that laid down principles limiting monarchical power and safeguarding parliamentary privileges. Serving as Lord Chancellor from 1697 to 1700, Somers upheld the rule of law and became a vital advisor to the monarch. Despite facing impeachment in 1701, his commitment to constitutional governance and individual liberties endured, leaving an enduring legacy in the development of English legal and political principles.Approximate Image Size: 5 ins x 4 ins.
