David Farragut, a prominent figure in American naval history, served as an Admiral in the Union Navy during the American Civil War. Best known for his courageous actions during the Battle of Mobile Bay, Farragut uttered the famous command, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" as he led the Union fleet into the heavily mined waters. This bold move resulted in a crucial Union victory. Earlier in the war, Farragut had achieved success by leading the capture of New Orleans, a significant Confederate city. His strategic acumen was further demonstrated in the capture of Fort Pillow on the Mississippi River. Farragut's naval leadership extended to the West Gulf Blockading Squadron, a key Union naval force. His career was not limited to the Civil War; Farragut had previously served in the U.S. Navy during the Mexican-American War and remained active in naval operations in the Gulf of Mexico. David Farragut's legacy endures as one of the distinguished naval commanders in American history.Published by Johnson Fry & Co. New York, 1868.
