Antique print, untitled. Portrait of sir Nicolas Bacon, Lord Keeper (1510 1579) who was an English politician during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England, notable as Lord Keeper of the Great Seal. He was the father of the philosopher and statesman Sir Francis Bacon. Etching / engraving on hand laid paper. Description: After a painting in the Collection of his Grace the Duke of Bedford. Published by J and P Knapton London, 1738. Provenance: L.A. de Vries (not in Lugt).Artists and Engravers: Made by 'I. Houbraken' after 'Frederico Zucchero'. Jakob Houbraken (1698-1780) was a very productive Dutch 18th. Century engraver, who produced a great number of book-illustrations in the taste of the time. He also engraved many portraits and some prints after contemporary masters. Federico Zucchero / Zuccaro (c.1540-1609) was an Italian history and portrait painter. He was the younger brother and pupil of Taddeo Z. Condition: Very good, given age. Trimmed at or near plate mark. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
