68pp. plus folding topographical map and thirty stereoscope views on individual mounts. Narrow 12mo. Text: Original printed wrappers. Small closed tear to the map at the attachment. Near fine. Stereoscopes in fine condition - clean and bright - with a caption printed on the rear of each mount. All in original cloth slipcase with spine in silver gilt. Second edition, following the first of 1900. An attractive stereoscopic tour of Yellowstone, with accompanying text. The text includes a brief history of Yellowstone, instructions on using the stereoscope, and extended captions for each view. Several geysers are pictured, including three stereoscopes of Old Faithful, as well as other cards showing bison, dramatic vistas, and the approaches to the park. The images are undated, but it is clear that they were taken prior to the construction of the Old Faithful Inn in 1903, and they were likely done around 1900, the date the text was originally copyrighted. The stereoscopes were produced by Sun Sculpture Works and Studios of Arlington and Westwood, New Jersey. The Underwood firm had earlier patented a hand-held stereoscopic viewer under the Sun Sculpture trademark. Each card is captioned on the verso in English, French, German, Spanish, Swedish, and Russian, and several cards contain long explanatory text on the recto as well. The map, copyrighted by Underwood & Underwood in 1905, is keyed to the number on the views, allowing the user to pinpoint the location of the scene in the greater context of Yellowstone. The views are (as captioned on the verso): 1) "Arriving by Northern Pacific R.R. at Gardiner, near Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 2) "Six-horse tally-ho leaving mountain walled Gardiner for Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 3) "From Yellowstone Park, North through its gateway to Gallatin Mts. U.S.A." 4) "Fort Yellowstone among the mountains, Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 5) "A Mountain of 'Petrified Water,' Yellowstone Park." 6) "How an overflowing spring begins to build a terrace, Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 7) "Cleopatra Terrace and its mirror-like pools, Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 8) "Wild buffalo, one of America's 'first families,' Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 9) "Golden Gate, entrance to a picturesque ravine in Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 10) "'Black Growler' whose steam kills trees. Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 11) "Glittering spray from 'Constant' Geyser, Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 12) "'The Devil's Ink Well' bubbling and boiling Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 13) "Grizzly bear at home in Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 14) "'Great Fountain' Geyser throwing up boiling water, Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 15) "The 'Black Warrior' Geyser, waving a banner of steam, Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 16) "Grotesque shapes of geyserite at 'Biscuit Basin,' Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 17) "Fifteen minute display of Riverside Geyser Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 18) "The 'Tea Kettle,' boiling hot from hidden fires; Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 19) "Sunrise in Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 20) "Peering into the mysterious crater of 'Old Faithful,' Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 21) "The most famous sight in Yellowstone Park - 'Old Faithful' geyser in action; U.S.A." 22) "Mirrored beauty of majestic 'Old Faithful,' Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 23) "Ominous bubbling and boiling in the 'Devil's Punch Bowl'; Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 24) "Keppler Cascade, Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 25) "West from the Continental Divide over Shoshone Lake, Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 26) "Fisherman at Lake turning to cook trout in a boiling spring, Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 27) "From Point Lookout, 1200 feet above the river, Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 28) "From Point Lookout down the Cañon to river 1200 feet below. Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 29) "Ten miles of yawning chasm - the Cañon of Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." 30) "Incredible heights and depths of the Cañon, Yellowstone Park, U.S.A." An important and appealing early visual record of America's most famous national park. Scarce and desirable. N° de ref. del artículo WRCAM63068

Complete collection of views showcasing the natural wonders of Yellowstone. The booklet begins with a general description of the park, which is followed by detailed descriptions of all thirty stereoviews. Views likely by Forsyth. Norman A. Forsyth (1869-1949) was a photographer who operated a studio out of Butte, Montana, from 1904-1930, working for Underwood and Underwood and later Keystone View Company. "When you see the Yellowstone through the stereoscope you omit the hours of railway and stage ride, but, even without their service, you can secure for yourself a thoroughly accurate and usually vivid sense of location, by using the special (patent) map which accompanies these stereographed outlooks. Do not fail to use the map in connection with each successive standpoint. You will find the slight effort repaid many times over in the increased vividness of your impressions and the heightened reality of the experience as a whole." - pg. 11. Nº de ref. del artículo: 9855
