Four volumes, tall octavo; size of bindings: 5 1/2 in. x 8 3/4 in. x 1 1/2 in. (thick), Volume 1: engraved portrait frontispiece (T. A. Dean, engraver/1845); viii, [1]-474 pp. Volume 2: iv, [1]-495 pp. Volume 3: iv, [1]-479 pp. Volume 4: (Moral Philosophy) xi, [1]-424 pp. Uniformly bound in full, polished tan calf, with five raised bands on the spines, and brown & red leather title labels with gilt titles and numbers, with spine compartments richly gilt with floral tooling, double-line gilt borders with floral tool in corners, around covers, gilt borders on cover edges and dentelles on leather turn-ins; headbands, all edges marbled, with similar marbled paper endpapers. Engraved heraldic bookplates on each marbled paste-down: M. R. Westropp (motto: Post Funera Virtus), M. R. Westropp has also added his signature in blue ink at the top of the titlepages, and a few, neat marginal notes. Under these bookplates, there are pasted a more recent, printed book label in each volume. Title labels show light rubbing, some rubbing, or small abrasions to leather surfaces on the cover edges/margins. Overall, a very well-preserved set in a handsome, 19th century binding.
