Print on Demand. This book offers a unique glimpse into the leisure activities of working men in New York City during the early 20th century. The author conducted a survey of over 1000 men, asking them about their daily routines from supper until bedtime, as well as on weekends and holidays. The results provide fascinating insights into the ways in which men spent their free time during a period of significant social and economic change. The author explores the relationship between hours of labor and the use of spare time, as well as the influence of occupation, age, nationality, and wage on leisure activities. The book sheds light on the historical context of working-class leisure, and the ways in which men sought entertainment, relaxation, and personal fulfillment outside of work. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

His investigation has been undertaken in order to determine how workingmen spend their leisure hours. On the sugges tion of Dr. Franklin H. Giddings, Professor of Sociology, Colum bia University, the questionnaire method was adopted and a time schedule prepared. The investigation was begun in February, 1912. More than schedules were distributed among working men thru the agency of Labor Unions, Clubs and Churches; but altho much interest in the study was manifested, only 113 properly filled out schedules were returned, and these were considered too few in number to serve as a basis for any general conclusions.
In the Fall of 1912 the Bureau of Social Service of the Home Mission Board of the Presbyterian Church became interested in the study and agreed to engage investigators to interview workingmen in order to secure a sufficient number willing to answer the questions. This investigation began on November lst, 1912, and was completed on February 3rd, 1913.
