Wrap-around pictorial paper-covered boards, in colors; original clear acetate d.j. 97 pp. text + 189 plates, 15 in color. D.j. shows typical wear: 1" x 2" chip to acetate at spine panel, 0.5" x 0.5" chip at fr. fold & 0.25 x 0.25 chip at rear fold, two 3" tears at spine & rear fold, moderate scuffing; signed & dated with a flourish by prior owner on f.f.e.p., bit of tanning at spine where acetate is chipped (as noted above), typical minor rippling at fore-edge, two dog-ears to rear (blank) leaves have been carefully straightened. Despite faults, a handsome, well-preserved copy. Originally published in the UK the same year, this massive retrospective work offers an early showcase for Sutherland's landscapes, portraits & nature studies & places him, appropriately, finally, in the same league as his more celebrated contemporaries such as John Piper, Henry Moore & Francis Bacon. It was not until 14 years later that another major Sutherland monograph was published, the massive Abrams retrospective. Sutherland's most (in)famous portrait, among the hundreds he executed was of Winston Churchill, who hated it so much Lady Churchill had it destroyed. Regardless of such disdain, few modern artists are so well represented in England's National Portait Gallery. Size: Imperial Square Quarto. N° de ref. de la librería 001767
