Paperback. Every situation in this book names its source - a named study, printed on the page, not a branded method and not a clip somebody shared. He arrives with a history nobody wrote down. The shelter paperwork is part record and part guess, the quiet first week tells you very little, and the internet hands you a rule of three days, three weeks and three months that no trial has ever tested. What has been counted is this: across 5068 adoptions, the share of adopters reporting something that worried them was highest not on day two but at the two-week call, at 60.6 percent. The loud third week is on schedule. It is not a sign that you picked the wrong dog.Forty-five situations, each on one spread: the ride home and the first hour, three days of doing almost nothing, the dog who will not eat, the nine words taught from zero to an adult who was trained by somebody else, the bowl he stands over, the hands he flinches from, the week he stops being quiet, two points of contact and the collar that slips, the cat, the children and the line where ninety days is not enough. What is on every spreadWhy this happens, with the research behind it.The one word from the nine this situation uses. Not this: the usual answers that make it worse.Do this: the steps, in the order you do them. How you know it is working, in things you can see and count.Call a pro: where the line is, and who to call when you reach it.The first weeks go well when they are dull by design: one room and a gate, meals behind a closed door, two clips on him before the front door opens, counters cleared and a bed he chose himself. So the first question on every page is what you can shut, double, clear away or leave alone, and only then what you can ask him for. What it does not do. It does not promise a different dog in ninety days. It promises a known one, a house arranged to fit him and a short written list of what will not change. It names no medicine and no dose - what to give, how much and how often are decisions for the person who has examined your dog - and a dog who arrives coughing, will not eat, empties out indoors after two clean weeks or snaps when a hand comes near goes to a veterinarian first. No brand of crate, harness, food or supplement is named, and no breed.Tenth and last book of the series. Each one stands alone and they share the same nine words. Book one covers the first thirty days with a puppy; this one answers it from the other end. House training, the hours he is left alone and loose-leash walking have their own books and are named here where they belong.Educational material. Not veterinary advice. It is not a sign that you picked the wrong dog.
Forty-five situations, each on one spread: the ride home and the first hour, three days of doing almost nothing, the dog who will not eat, the nine words taught from zero to an adult who was trained by somebody else, the bowl he stands over, the hands he flinches from, the week he stops being quiet, two points of contact and the collar that slips, the cat, the children and the line where ninety days is not enough.
What is on every spread
Why this happens, with the research behind it.
The one word from the nine this situation uses.
Not this: the usual answers that make it worse.
Do this: the steps, in the order you do them.
How you know it is working, in things you can see and count.
Call a pro: where the line is, and who to call when you reach it.
The first weeks go well when they are dull by design: one room and a gate, meals behind a closed door, two clips on him before the front door opens, counters cleared and a bed he chose himself. So the first question on every page is what you can shut, double, clear away or leave alone, and only then what you can ask him for.
What it does not do. It does not promise a different dog in ninety days. It promises a known one, a house arranged to fit him and a short written list of what will not change. It names no medicine and no dose — what to give, how much and how often are decisions for the person who has examined your dog — and a dog who arrives coughing, will not eat, empties out indoors after two clean weeks or snaps when a hand comes near goes to a veterinarian first. No brand of crate, harness, food or supplement is named, and no breed.
Tenth and last book of the series. Each one stands alone and they share the same nine words. Book one covers the first thirty days with a puppy; this one answers it from the other end. House training, the hours he is left alone and loose-leash walking have their own books and are named here where they belong.
