History is not just the story of kings and generals. It is the story of queens who commanded armies, warriors who answered the call, rebels who refused to kneel, and everyday heroines who rebuilt communities after plague and famine. For centuries, their names were erased from chronicles, their statues smashed, their achievements attributed to men. But the evidence was never entirely lost. It survived in marriage contracts, property deeds, court records, and the margins of manuscripts.
Women Who Ruled is a plain-English history that uncovers the untold stories of sovereign queens, warriors, and everyday heroines who shaped the world. From Hatshepsut, the Egyptian pharaoh whose name was chiseled from history, to Boudica, the Celtic queen who led a rebellion against Rome. From the Viking shield-maidens of Scandinavia to Nzinga, the African queen who fought Portuguese colonization for three decades. From the trobairitz, the female troubadours who shaped court culture, to the midwives who attended the most politically charged births in history.
This book is for curious readers, students, history buffs, and anyone who has ever wondered what it actually felt like to live through a turning point in the past. Written in clear, accessible prose, it brings to life the women who ruled in ways that history has too often ignored.
Inside this book, you will discover:
- Sovereign queens who ruled in their own right, from Hatshepsut to Elizabeth I
- Warriors who answered the call: Viking shield-maidens, African generals, Celtic rebels, and cavalry commanders of the Central Asian steppes
- Spies, strategists, and shadow rulers who shaped policy from behind the throne
- Rebels who refused to kneel: slave revolt leaders, peasant generals, and martyrs of independence
- Merchants, moneylenders, and market women who financed wars and built trading empires
- Scribes, poets, and chroniclers who preserved knowledge and shaped court culture
- healers, midwives, and keepers of knowledge whose traditions were silenced but never lost
- The everyday work of rule: estate managers, household leaders, and patrons of the arts
- Survivors of catastrophe: survivors, refugee queens, and famine keepers who rebuilt communities
- The erased and the rediscovered: archaeological discoveries, purged records, and the clues in marginalia that restored their stories
What this book is not:
This is a text-only, reader-friendly exploration of women's history. It contains no images, illustrations, or maps. What it contains is what matters most: the stories themselves.
About the Author
Adrian J. Hartwell is an independent history writer dedicated to uncovering the human stories behind the pivotal moments of the past. He writes for curious readers, students, and history buffs who want clarity, trustworthiness, and genuine engagement without the fog of academic jargon or the noise of manufactured drama. In Women Who Ruled , Hartwell offers a clear and accessible exploration of the untold stories of sovereign queens, battlefield commanders, and everyday heroines who shaped the world.
When not writing, Hartwell can be found speaking with his bookshelf about the legacy of female leadership or speaking to community groups about the stories that history textbooks often leave out. He believes that the past is never truly past, and that the stories we tell about it shape the world we leave behind.

**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone.
