Neuware - Sol Batiste reads a room the way most detectives read a case file - posture, eye contact, what somebody's hands do before they answer a question - and she trusts what she sees there faster than she trusts a subpoena. Dev Reyes-Wright reads a case file the way most people read a room: methodically, twice, with the assumption that anything not written down doesn't yet exist. Paired without being asked, on a body that's washed up looking like an accident and isn't one, they spend their first case disagreeing about nearly everything - jurisdiction, evidence, whether a four-minute conversation with a fisherman is worth anything at all.It would be easy to make this a romance. It isn't one. What Sol and Dev build instead is a working partnership, tested the hard way: her network gets them access his paperwork never could reach; his paper trail protects a case her instinct alone couldn't make hold up in a courtroom, in front of a judge who's never once met either of them. Neither method wins outright. Both turn out to be necessary, in a case that runs from a Puerto Rico beach through a Nassau marina to a Curaçao shell company, and into a land-fraud scheme with a body count and a deadline of its own.If you've read enough detective partnerships where the professional tension is really just romantic tension wearing a trench coat, this isn't that book - and that's the point, not an accident of it. Sol and Dev's partnership is the whole engine of the story: earned through eleven days of friction, real disagreement, and one dark-moment fight neither of them fully wins, resolving into something sturdier than chemistry - actual, professional trust, extended unevenly and honestly, the way trust in real life usually gets extended.White Sand, Red Blood is Book 1 of a new Caribbean procedural series for readers who want the case-cracking chemistry of a great detective duo without the genre's usual romantic subplot standing in its way.…
