Where the River Keeps Names. Este artículo no está disponible.Where the River Keeps Names

Some towns bury their past.
Willow's Crossing let the river keep it.

After a violent summer storm tears through Willow's Crossing, the Ashwater River begins to give something back.

A child's shoe.
A rusted watch.
A name no one remembers.

When seven-year-old Marcus brings home a perfectly preserved shoe from the riverbank, it sparks a quiet unease that spreads through the town. Soon, more objects appear-intact, impossible, and deeply personal. Children begin whispering unfamiliar names in their sleep. Elders grow silent. And the air itself feels... heavier.

Mara Greene has always been able to sense what others ignore-the weight of unspoken stories, the presence of what lingers. But what's rising from the Ashwater isn't one spirit.

It's many.

As Mara is drawn deeper into the mystery, she uncovers a hidden truth woven into the town's history: generations of lives quietly erased, their stories buried beneath silence, shame, and survival. With the help of a reluctant groundskeeper, a determined archivist, and a community forced to confront its past, Mara must do something far more difficult than facing the dead-

She must help the living remember.

Because the voices in the water aren't seeking revenge.
They're asking to be named.

And until they are, the river will not rest.

In this powerful and haunting novel, Albert Scales delivers:

A story where the true horror isn't what was done...
But what was forgotten.

Hi! I'm Albert Scales, an author and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). I am an African American writer who grew up in the inner cities of Essex County, New Jersey, with family roots that trace back to the plantations of the Carolinas. My work is shaped by that history-by the stories carried through generations, the resilience within our communities, and the quiet truths that often go unspoken.

I am the creator of the Brave on the Inside children's book series, which features a young Black girl navigating themes of self-confidence, courage, emotional awareness, and finding her voice. These stories are written for children who may feel unseen or uncertain, while also creating space for meaningful conversations between children, parents, and educators.

I also write cozy-horror fiction from an African American perspective, blending elements of the supernatural with cultural memory, family history, and community life. My stories focus less on fear and more on atmosphere-exploring how the past lingers, how places hold memory, and how healing can emerge from the truths we inherit.

Across all of my work, I center African American experiences with care, intention, and emotional depth-creating stories that are reflective, grounded, and rooted in both history and humanity.
