It all started in 1948 when two teenage parents started a family. The first born child was a son, and the second child was a daughter, then another son came, and then fourth and fifth were daughters. The children's names were: Running Deer, Running Elk, Eagle Bear, Golden Hair, and Cheyenne.
At the age of two years old, Running Deer would ride his tricycle in his pajamas to one end of the village to the other end of the village where his grandparents lived. Before he got to the grandparents' house the police would stop him and return him to his parents' home. Running Elk learned to walk and talk at the age of six months old and her father taught her how to say swear words. The mother hated Running Elk, but more so when she used the swear words the father taught her. Running Elk would use the swear words in church and the mother would beat Running Elk along with washing her mouth out with soap. Running Elk loved her father very much and longed to be his little princess; the father valued his sons and pushed her to the wayside. One day at the top of the stairs Running Elk told her father that she farted, he laughed. However the mother slapped the little girl and told her she could not say the word fart again; her father told her to use the word cootie pooted instead of fart. When Running Deer was four years old, he had to have T & A operation due to complications which occur in the middle of night the night nurse was sleeping, instead of watching her little four year old patient , due to a blood clot broke the stitches which cause him to bleed through his plastic sheet covering right thru the mattress that early morning before Running Deer's father went to work he stopped into the hospital to see his little son and found him almost dead from bleeding all night almost bled to death. His father went to the nurse's station and demanded to see the nurse that was supposed to be watching his son on night duty; also to speak to the family doctor, he was very mad. The doctor fired the nurse for being incompetent, and then he quickly rushed Running Deer back into emergency surgery to save the little boy's life. The father had told the doctor that anything happened to his son, he would make sure that the doctor would never work again. When Running Deer return back home from the hospital, he had wonderful gifts, coloring books, crayons, picture puzzles so many activities for a four year old keep him quiet enough so that he could heal. Now his younger sister, who was two years younger just wanted to color, but her older brother said. "No you cannot color in my books because you don't know how to color inside your lines."
Running Deer had eaten something that pulled the stitches from the back of his throat: which cause him to start bleeding really bad. He had to be rushed back to the hospital for emergency surgery once again to save his life. While her big brother was taken back to the hospital Running Elk decided she would color in his coloring books after all her big brother wasn't there to stop her. Yes, she scribbled every page in that coloring book, so when her brother got home he was so mad that he told their mother and Running Elk got a spanking, now because of where they were living the children could not go out to play in the park because only colored children could play in Park so the parents moved the family out into the country into a four bedroom house that they rented, complete with an outhouse and garden. The mother had been playing the piano since she herself was a very young child. In fact, the mother could play any instrument, also had a very beautiful voice their mother also taught their father how to play the guitar. When Running Elk was four years old, she and her two brothers decided they would play cowboys and Indians before they started playing the game Eagle Bear peed in front of the piano where running elk was chasing her brother's, she slipped in slid right into the corner of the bottom of the piano when she cut her head she was taken to the emergency room to get stitches then she got to go to her grandparents' house where grandpa had for her two beautiful surprises. A beautiful red dress and a beautiful blue dress; these were party dresses that would be worn to church; that was Running Elk's reward for being so brave and not crying when she got her stitches Eagle bear got a spanking for wetting on the floor. A few months later, her grandfather in the spring decided he was going to dig a basement, so grandpa borrowed a cement mixer, from Running Elks great uncle Tom. A very large deep hole was dug for the basement. Then the cement mixer truck came in poured the cement for the floor of the basement grandpa with help level the floor and was now ready to start the walls grandpa had the cement blocks delivered in the meantime, China Doll brought her five kids to the grandparents' house to do laundry with her mother, Running Deer went outside to play. He was told not to play with, that cement mixer like any six-year-old good little boy. Running Deer made a game out of the cement mixer taking the handle of the cement mixer halfway up and letting go, causing the mixer to slam down on the other side. He was enjoying the game so very much that Running Elk came out to see what her big brother was doing, she asked if she could play the game at four and half years old. He told her he didn't think she could pick that heavy handle up. However, she said she could lift the handle if he let her try. When she got halfway up in midair because of the weight of the cement mixer before she could let go the cement mixer fell to the other side. It took her right hand down too cutting the top of her thumb off into the top of the motor gears. Her big brother who now saw that she was injured yelled let go into the house to mom, let go Running Elk yelled let go. He saw that she was bleeding and was trying to carry her into the house. She started cussing him out because he was going to drop her. She told him to run ahead for help. She would walk into the house where her mother was already at the front door with a very big towel wrapped around her right hand got her into the car and started speeding up the road. Also, honking the horn and running stop signs Running Elk told her to stop honking the horn also to stop running the stop signs because China Doll could get them into a car accident before they got to the hospital. Once arriving at the emergency room of the hospital Running Elk was taken into an ER room for treatment the nurses cleaned her right hand and thumb with soapy solution then with a green solution of antiseptic while the nurses were treating Running Elk the pediatrician told China Doll that they would have to amputate the right thumb down to the first joint China Doll said no we would wait for our Dr. Bunny Rabbit once he arrived; he said because Running Elk was so young that we need to bandage the right thumb up to see if a top would form on its own family Doctor told the mother to bring her over to his office for an appointment in a week at that time he would change the bandage on the thumb and also see how the thumb was progressing the following week China Doll drove little Running Elk to her doctor appointment the doctor looked at the thumb said it was doing well bandage it and said he would see them in another week now since the doctor's office was in the next town China Doll drove Running Elk over to her parents' home where the accident had originally happened to let them know of the progress of the child's right thumb before they left to go home grandpa had told running elk because she was such a good little girl at the doctor's office; he had a surprise for her look in the refrigerator he had bought her the biggest box the bubble gum she had ever seen and that she didn't have to share that bubble gum that was just for her being so brave at the doctor's office she never cried when the doctor took off the bandage to clean the right thumb before bandaging the thumb again two days later very early in the morning on a Saturday Running Deer, Eagle Bear, Golden Hair got Cheyenne up out of her crib they told Cheyenne that Running Elk was missing the top of her right thumb and would she like to see it, all she had to do was removed the bandage while Running Elk was sleeping. Cheyenne was only two year old she got that bandage off without waking Running Elk up and little girl passed out once she took the bandage off the top of her right thumb you could look at the bone of the thumb the other three kids made so much noise that it woke Running Elk up when she saw the bandage had been removed she was mad she took the bandage put it back on the thumb and went into her parents' bedroom and told them what the four brothers and sisters had done to her while she was sleeping China Doll told her to go get dressed, she would drive her back to the doctors so that he could re bandage the thumb on the way back from the doctors they again got to stop at her grandparents' house grandpa had another surprise for Running Elk this time he brought her two more very beautiful little dresses one was red with white polka dots and the other one was blue they were both party dresses the kind that only princess got to wear because once again Running Elk was a very brave little girl who never cried when the doctor had tended to her thumb. The brothers and sisters never messed with the bandage after that because for the first time they got to see just how bad it looked without that bandage once the thumb healed a top and nail was formed the bandage came off.
On a beautiful warm sunny summer day there Bear Eagle had plowed a space for a garden the five children were out there with their father, they began asking him where do babies come from he replied crow came along and sat down on a tree stump and shit you out there; then their father gave each one of the children handful of seeds and showed them how to plant it in the ground he did tell them of the wonderful story how those seeds would grow into wonderful plants that would have food on them to eat. The next day Bear Eagle took his wife and five little children over to his parents who lived on Angel Hill now as they were driving to the grandparents' home on the dirt road her father stopped the car he got out walked to the trunk of the car took out a jack handle and walked to the front of the car he put the jack handle down to the ground then went back to the trunk where he put the jack handle back into the trunk of the car then close the trunk then got into the car then drove to his parent's once they were at Bear Eagles parents' home their grandfather along with the uncles went to the trunk of the car to show them what he had caught along the road it was a very large snapping turtle that would make delicious turtle soup, grandpa, the uncles, and Bear Eagle took the jack handle with that snapping turtle who was lockdown onto that jack handle away from all the grandchildren as well as the women so that they could kill and skin the turtle for the meat that would go into the turtle soup that they would be eating that day because Running Elk could not play in the sun for very long periods time; because she would get really bad nosebleeds, Running Elk was only allowed to play outside for short periods at a time after grandma needed her to go into the living room because the kitchen was for the womenfolk to fix supper that way a little girl would not see the bloody body of the turtle in the sink that grandma would be preparing for the supper meal she send her into the living room to talk to her grandfather, Running Elk sat on her grandpas lap she was admiring her grandmother's doll lamp as little girls do she was asking her grandfather why he wore bib overalls or why he had his hand in his bib overalls grandpa told her to get down and go back into the kitchen he then called for grandma to come get the child she was asking too many questions so Running Elk went back outside into the sunlight and was asking her brothers what they were doing behind grandpa shed Running Deer was pointing to the back wall where grandpa had nailed the animal hides after killing and skinning them for meat of the animal. The children as always was running and playing on the top of Angel Hill at grandpa and grandma's house Running Elk got a bloody nose this time it didn't stop so her uncle Kind Bird took her back into the house, into the living room where he, grandparents the parents as well as their other uncles and aunts came into the room to try to get the child's nose to stop bleeding nothing they tried was working Uncle Kind Bird ask his mother for the large metal dish pan for little Running Elk to lean over to bleed into this went on for a very long time, that the parents thought that they would have to take the little girl to the emergency room to get a nosebleed stopped little Running Elk started to feel very panicky because with all the things the family was trying nothing seemed to work China Doll told everyone to stop fussing over the little girl finally after a very long time the little girls nosebleed finally stopped it was dark by this time it was time for the parents to take the five little kids back home Running Elk on the drive back ask how she could find her grandparents' home in the dark and her mother replied follow the moon just follow the moon as a little girl watched the moon on their way back to their house sure enough the moon would show her grandparents' home. When Running Elk was four years old her older brother who was two years older had taught her so many wonderful things; by the time she was eight months old her older brother was teaching her how to be potty broke, now this little girl would follow him to the outhouse so before he sat down to potty on one of the two holes he would lift his younger sister up help her to sit on the edge so as to not fall into the hole. Now that she's four years old her big brother showing her how to tie her own shoes Running Elk was so independent that she practiced ting her shoes, that she practiced so hard so many times that she forgot how to tie her shoes so she asked her big brother again oh Running Deer please show me how to tie my shoes one more time. Running Deer was such a wonderful big brother so patient that he showed her how to tie her shoes one more time, he also told her that would be the last time, that he would show her and she should not forget again. Her father who had watched his little girl learning to tie her own shoes as well as becoming so independent for such a four-year old little girl that he told China Doll it was time to send the little girl to school so her father brought her a precious little lunchbox because school was all day in a one room school house which was right across the street from a fenced in quicksand area the children at the school house were told by the teacher not to go across the street and to play in the field. Now because the young schoolteacher was so inexperienced she would have her kindergartners play and color all day she would work with grades four through six with their lessons needed to learn, then she would have the all the grades play court with an actual mock trial a few months later the young teacher was replaced with an older experienced teacher. When the new teacher started working with the kindergartners because Running Elk was only four years old at the time the teacher wanted to see if she could read so the teacher called her up to her desk the teacher sat her on her lap to show her the pictures in the book she pointed to different picture and asking what they were before the little girl could answer the teacher moved onto a different picture the teacher confused the little girl so bad that she just sat there not knowing what she wanted unfortunately this teacher had no patience as a result, when China Doll came to pick up her children from the school that day the teacher told the mother not to bring Running Elk back-to-school because she was just too little to learn however the teacher wanted the little four and half-year-old little girl to learn twinkle twinkle little star to re-sight it at the Christmas pageant because all the children would have special parts to play in the pageant. Running Elk had blond very curly hair and was so small for a four and half-year-old she would be perfect for the part because she was so cute. Her parents sat right in front row the little girl was so scared that her dad was giving her words to the poem it seems like a lifetime for little Running Elk to stand up there in front all those people after the pageant was over and on the way home the little girl felt like a failure for not knowing all her lines because she was so scared in front of all those people. Her father told her she had done a very wonderful job and that he was so very proud of her for standing up in front of all those people to recite her poem than the little girl felt very special; little Running Elk decided next year when she was old enough to go to school she would do much better.
