What Are We Feeding Them. Este artículo no está disponible. What Are We Feeding Them

Something has gone wrong with the food we feed our families. Ultra-processed food now accounts for more than half the calories consumed by families in most Western countries - and the figure is higher still for children. These are not fringe products. They are the mainstream of the modern food supply: the breakfast cereals, the flavoured yogurts, the packaged snacks, the fruit pouches, the ready meals, the chicken nuggets. They are everywhere, heavily marketed at children specifically, and engineered with considerable scientific sophistication to be eaten in quantities larger than your body would otherwise choose.

The research on what this does to family health is no longer preliminary. High ultra-processed food consumption is linked to disrupted gut development, impaired attention and behaviour, altered brain chemistry, obesity, cardiovascular disease, depression, and the establishment of dietary patterns that are extremely difficult to change in adulthood. And yet most parents are never given a clear explanation of what ultra-processed food actually is, how it works, or what to do about it.

WHAT ARE WE FEEDING THEM fills that gap.

Dr. Lisa Carmichael, PhD - nutritional scientist with fifteen years of research experience in food systems and child nutrition - translates the science into plain language and gives parents a practical, non-judgmental roadmap for change. Not a perfect diet. Not an expensive overhaul. A realistic, gradual transition that works with real budgets, real schedules, and real children who have opinions about what they will and will not eat.

Inside this book you will discover:

• What ultra-processed food actually is - and why the definition is more useful than you might expect
• How it is engineered to be irresistible - the bliss point, the additives, and the dopamine loop
• What it does to children's developing bodies - gut health, immunity, growth, and micronutrient gaps
• What it does to children's brains - focus, behaviour, mood, and the reward system
• How to read a food label and see through the front-of-pack marketing
• How supermarkets and digital platforms are designed to work against your family's best interests
• How to make the transition without turning mealtimes into a battleground
• How to feed your family well on a real budget - the cheapest foods are often the most nutritious
• How to raise food-literate children who carry good habits into adulthood

This is not a book about guilt. Every parent in this book is doing their best in a food environment that has been deliberately designed to make ultra-processed food the path of least resistance. Understanding that environment - and learning to navigate it - is what changes things.

Your family does not need to eat perfectly. It needs to eat better. This book will show you how.
