"Grammy," asked Dalen, "what color am I?"

It is a simple question, the kind every child asks at some point, and the answer Grammy gives becomes a joyful, colorful adventure the two of them will never forget.

What Color Am I follows curious little Dalen as his grandmother shows him the sparkling white of fresh snow on a winter morning, the deep red of blooming roses, the warm gold of the sun, and the brilliant blue of a bluebird soaring overhead. With every new color, Dalen giggles, wonders, and asks again, slowly discovering that he is so much more than just one shade; he is a beautiful blend of many.

Around the kitchen table, love, laughter, and a little bit of paint bring the lesson to life. Dalen and Grammy mix colors together the way artists do, testing and blending until, at last, they create the most perfect color of all: Dalen's Brown, a rich, warm shade that reflects exactly who he is.

This heartwarming celebration of skin, identity, and God's perfect design gently reminds every child, of every color, that they are wonderfully made, exactly as they were meant to be. Written with warmth, rhythm, and a grandmother's tender voice, What Color Am I is a picture book families will return to again and again, whether they are having their own conversations about skin color and identity, celebrating a multicultural or multiracial family, or simply looking for a joyful story about the special bond between a child and a grandparent.

Perfect for read-aloud time, classroom diversity lessons, church nurseries, and bedtime, this self-esteem picture book helps children build confidence in who they are while opening the door for parents, grandparents, and teachers to talk openly about skin color, uniqueness, and belonging in age-appropriate, faith-affirming ways. It is a natural fit for families building a home library around books that celebrate God's design in every skin tone and every child.

With rhythmic, repeatable text perfect for storytime and a gentle rhyme-like cadence young children love to echo back, this diversity and self-esteem picture book pairs beautifully with lessons on colors, families, and kindness, making it a favorite pick for teachers, librarians, and parents building an inclusive, faith-filled home library.

Dalen's story reminds us all that our differences are not something to explain away. They are something to celebrate. Share What Color Am I with the child in your life, and watch a simple question turn into a beautiful conversation about identity, love, and the many perfect colors God chose to make.
