294 pages. Tight bright book with no apparent marks or stamps. Book has light wear on both covers and some wear to edges. Date sticker back cover. Subject of PBS documentary World Without Walls. Beryl Markham was an early woman aviator in colonial East Africa and was involved in many early aviation accomplishments. She was born in England in 1902 and was taken by her father to East Africa in 1906. A horse breeder, adventurer and farmer, he chose East Africa because it was new and you could feel the future of it under your feet. She spent her childhood playing with native Murani children and watching her father transform a stretch of wilderness into a working farm. Against this backdrop of primitive Africa, an Africa that no longer exists, Markham describes her life with care, eloquent prose, and a moving narrative. With the skill of someone who has filled long nights with stories, the author recounts her adventures - discoveries, rescues, and narrow escapes, the glint of an airplane abandoned in the desert, the look of a lion about to pounce. much more than a pilot's memoir. From a letter to Maxwell Perkins: Did you read Beryl Markham's book, West With The Night? I knew her fairly well in Africa and never would have suspected that she could and would put pen to paper except to write in her flyer's log book. As it is, she has written so well, and marvelously well, that I was completely ashamed of myself as a writer. I felt that I was simply a carpenter with words, picking up whatever was furnished on the job and nailing them together and sometimes making an okay pig pen. But she can write rings around all of us who consider ourselves writers. The only parts of it that I know about personally, on account having been there at the time and heard the other people's stories, are absolutely true. I wish you would get it and read it because it is really a bloody, wonderful book. --- Ernest Hemingway.
