In Hallowmere, magic runs on debt. Every working costs something — paid in years, in memory, in bonds — and the one law older than any Warden's oath is simple: you can never undo your own mistake.
Wren Ashcombe has spent nineteen years believing her hands don't matter. She's a coldsmith, working metal the Law can't touch, standing forever in the shadow of her gifted older sister, Marren — until the morning she finds Marren on the floor of the Warden-house, turning slowly to glass.
Marren broke the one Law that can't be broken. No living Warden can save her. But there's an old story about a relic at the edge of the world — the Last Ember — said to undo what should be unforgivable, if the right hand ever dares to reach for it.
Wren's hands have never been worth anything to the Law her whole life.
That might be exactly why they're the only ones that can.
With a disgraced Warden's apprentice and a hardened salvager as her only allies, Wren crosses a wasteland of walking debts and hunted grief to reach a Forge that will ask her for a price no caster has ever been willing to pay — and force her to decide whether the girl she's always believed herself to be was ever the whole truth at all.
The Weight Compass is a character-driven quest fantasy about the cost of rescue, the quiet violence of being underestimated, and what it actually means to become someone new. For readers of Naomi Novik and T. Kingfisher.
