The empire sent its best investigator. He was ready.
Commander Cael Ashwick built a fleet from a dead destroyer and a frontier nobody watched. Now the Castellan intelligence directorate is watching, and they've sent an analyst who asks questions the way a surgeon makes incisions.
While managing the investigation from the bridge of a pre-collapse heavy cruiser, Cael must expand his fleet through political alliances, discover ancient industrial infrastructure hidden in an asteroid belt, and outmaneuver rival frontier houses through commerce instead of combat. Every victory makes his engagement file harder to explain. Every report the system files broadcasts data in formats nobody alive can read.
The scars connecting the frontier to the empire are destabilizing. His command systems confirm what only he knows: something is approaching from beyond mapped space, and the timeline for humanity's survival just got shorter.
When the investigator departs with an inconclusive report, she recommends sending someone better. And across the empire, a Great House just found a classification in their archives that hasn't been active in three hundred years.
