Paperback. Maren Shaw builds instruments she never hears played. For fifteen years, the luthier has devoted herself to the quiet discipline of crafting violins and cellos in her Vermont workshop, sending them out into the world and keeping a careful distance from the lives they go on to lead. It is a life built on patience, precision, and the belief that some doors are better left closed. Then Joel Adler arrives in Hallow. An acoustic consultant hired to assess the town's long-abandoned Music Hall, Joel needs instruments for a restoration project. What begins as a simple professional arrangement slowly becomes something more as he and Maren discover a shared understanding of music, loss, and the things people leave unfinished. The Music Hall has stood silent for years, carrying memories neither of them expected to revisit. For Maren, the hall is tied to a past she has carefully avoided. For Joel, it holds echoes of a career-ending loss he rarely discusses. As the restoration project progresses, both find themselves drawn back toward places they thought they had left behind.Set in a small Vermont town filled with workshops, river streets, and the enduring power of live music, The Weight of the Air is a thoughtful and deeply human novel about grief, craftsmanship, second chances, and the courage required to return to what matters most. For readers who enjoy character-driven literary fiction, emotional relationships, and stories about art, memory, and renewal.
As the restoration project progresses, both find themselves drawn back toward places they thought they had left behind.
Set in a small Vermont town filled with workshops, river streets, and the enduring power of live music, The Weight of the Air is a thoughtful and deeply human novel about grief, craftsmanship, second chances, and the courage required to return to what matters most.
For readers who enjoy character-driven literary fiction, emotional relationships, and stories about art, memory, and renewal.
