Paperback. Still Waters Run Deep A Novel by D. R. Saenz When investigative journalist Mara Calloway witnesses a murder on a snow-covered ridge above the small Wyoming town of Rimrock, she has spent eight months hiding what she knows - and why. The victim is a federal land agent. The killers work for the most powerful ranching family in Fremont County. And the evidence Mara has painstakingly assembled, tracing a web of shell companies and bribery from Cutter Creek Holdings to the U.S. Department of the Interior, is the only thing that can bring them to justice - or get her killed. Deputy Marshal Cole Hargrove finds a woman's glove at the murder scene and a photograph that changes everything. When he tracks it to a photographer working quietly out of a Lander studio, he makes a choice that will cost him professionally and define him personally: he withholds the evidence and sets out to protect her himself. Set against the vast, unforgiving landscape of Wyoming's Wind River Range - with its brutal winters, open rangeland, and the particular dignity of a place that does not apologize for itself - Still Waters Run Deep is a story about what it means to do the right thing when the right thing is dangerous, about the slow building of trust between two people who have both learned to be careful, and about the country that holds them both and, in time, becomes theirs together.
