the author was sent to a warmer climate to improve his health and regain strength. by the author's third trip abroad, he found himself tiring of the East; he believed that seeing ether dighted and sacred history was a perfect one, though subsequent trips wear the experience thing, especially whilst being bit by mosquitos, especially when he wasn't making these journeys by choice. however, he may have disliked the journeys, his visits meant that he gained a lot of experiences travelling from country to country, offering a nice snapshot of what international travel was like in the mid nineteenth century. the author also offers some advice to his fellow English travellers, such as how to spend your money, and the advice not to travel on any French steamers, because he claims they were all dirty. In this work, the author describes his trips to Malta, Smyrna, Cairo, Ethiopia, Jerusalem, Rome, Florence, Venice, and more. a second volume was published in the 1860s. illustrated in sixty-five in0text engravings. has an inscription on the inside board.
