Handsomely bound in full eighteenth century calf, spines ornately gilt with contrasting red and green leather lettering labels, tooling of stars within triangles, theatrical gilt devices of masks and trumpets and vases within floral swathes. Marbled endpapers and blue marbled edges. Some scuffing to the boards and minor rubbing. Binding in original eighteenth century condition unpolished and unrestored. Bookplate of Vane Londonderry the Marquis. The famous second edition of Thomas Hanmer's illustrated Works of Shakespear, expanded from the first. This splendid second edition contains Pope's original Preface, the first appearance of Rowe's important biography of Shakespeare, and additional notes by Percy, Warton and Hawkins, as well as a larger glossary and a poem by Ben Jonson. Collates- Portrait of Shakespeare, two other plates of the Westminster and Stratford monuments to Shakespeare, 27 engraved tailpieces and 36 theatrical plates by Francis Hayman engraved by Hubert Gravelot. The plates are frontispieces to the individual plays. Pages xxix, (x), 514, (xiv), 600, (xvii), 563, (xxiii), 508, (xvii), 552, (xix), 547, (xxv), (1), glossary (xxx). Complete. Condition- VERY GOOD but for the occasional spot and the following specific minor issues- a small hole to the title of Comedies, an old damp stain to the plate for the Merchant of Venice and about 3 very small marginal chips. Volume three pages 475-490 with a bottom corner turned with some discolouration. Page 513 volume five repaired. Pages 425-430 in volume six bound out of order but complete.
