Voices Within: Life Before and After (Paperback or Softback)

Lana Stasek doesn’t write to please. She writes like she’s peeling skin off old wounds—her own and everyone else’s. This isn’t a polite scrapbook of dates and places. It’s a memory under a spotlight, family laid bare, the invisible debts no one ever asked for but everyone drags around. If you’re here for comfort, you picked the wrong book. What you’ll find is recognition—the kind that stings first, then heals later.

Voices Within: Life Before and After doesn’t play nice. Dreams aren’t fairy escapes—they’re x-rays, showing what the body already knows but the mind keeps locked up. Immigration isn’t a victory parade. It’s freedom with a price tag: exhaustion, humiliation, endless reinvention. Even sunlight through a borrowed window feels like rebellion when the rest of your life screams dependence.

And the dark? It’s here, too. A cold mother. Soviet brutality. Silence that hardened into armor—and then into a weapon. Sometimes that silence blew outward, turning her into the kid who bullied others. Not many admit this. She does. Because cruelty never simply disappears. It circles back, like a boomerang—maybe not to the same hand, but always close enough to cut.

Every insult here is a study in power. Every neglect, a test. Is pain inherited, or does each generation manufacture its own fresh supply? Nothing is random. The abandoned dog, the watered-down milk, the petty betrayals—they’re not accidents. They’re the blueprint of a world where survival often means repeating the very violence you swore to end. Illness and loss aren’t blind fate either. They’re echoes. Consequences. The unpaid bill.

And yet this book isn’t only a diagnosis. It’s a fight. Between graves and bureaucrats, there’s laughter—sharp, survival laughter. Not because it’s funny, but because silence would kill faster. This is a book about refusing to vanish. About standing knee-deep in the ruins and still saying: here I am.

Voices Within isn’t tragedy, though scars run through it. It isn’t nostalgia, though it looks back. It’s truth dragged into the open — a witnessing that won’t let silence stay cheap, won’t let wounds be forgotten, won’t let a single voice, once found, ever go unheard. It’s survival without polish, memory without mercy, and the raw courage it takes to name what others bury...

I’m not competing with coaches or therapists. I don’t want their titles, degrees, or clever methods. I don’t have twelve-step systems or life diagrams. I don’t teach — I tell how it was for me, when everything inside was falling apart, when I lost myself, when no one offered a shoulder, and I had to learn to lean on my own spine.

Some people give lectures about boundaries, self-worth, and mental hygiene. Me — I just lived it. No flipcharts, no retreats, just surviving, and that was my only qualification. I write from the floor, from the inside, from the place where pain lives and where fear, anger, and loneliness breathe — from where real women live, not the polished ones on Instagram.

Don’t read me like an expert — I’m not speaking from above you, I’m beside you. I know what it’s like to sit on the bathroom floor trying not to fall apart, to hold yourself together at work while everything inside shakes, to act strong when all you want is someone to hold you without asking if you’re overreacting, without analyzing you, just being there like a human. I don’t promise happiness, I promise the truth — no filters, no sugar, just how it was for me. If it resonates, take it. If it doesn’t, move on. I’m not here to convince anyone. I’m here because I’m still alive, and I’m not staying silent...

Lana Stasek is a Ukrainian-born author and independent publisher based in the United States. A writer by necessity rather than ambition, she built a life and a business after arriving in the U.S. with two children and no English - an experience that forged the "grit" and observation skills central to her work.Stasek is the creator of the Voices Within project, a series of independent works linked not by plot, but by the profound themes of identity, resilience, and the human cost of silence. Writing across genres, she blends psychological insight with philosophical reflection to explore what is inherited and what is chosen. Her work examines the things we carry even when they are never spoken - internal breaks, learned survival, and the silent strength required to begin again.Through her unique lens as an international observer, Stasek captures the raw truth of lived experience, recording the stories that often slip away before they can be told.
