Paperback. The human body contains approximately 37 trillion cells, all of them working right now, without your permission, without your awareness, without pause.VISCERA is a book about what is happening inside you.It is not a textbook. It is not a medical manual. It is an art book that uses the human body as its subject - organ by organ, chapter by chapter - rendered in original dark baroque illustrations in deep gold, crimson, and black, inspired by the great Renaissance anatomists who first dared to look inside and draw what they found.Thirty-one chapters. Thirty organs. One closing essay about why this book exists at all. Each chapter follows the same structure: what the organ is, what it does, how to keep it healthy, and one strange but true fact that will make you look at your own body differently. The brain that cleans itself during sleep. The liver that can regenerate from a quarter of its original mass. The skin that replaces itself completely every few weeks. The heart that beats forty million times a year and asks for nothing in return. The writing is accessible, honest, and occasionally funny. The author is not a doctor - she says so herself, in the preface, with complete sincerity. The illustrations are extraordinary.VISCERA began as a joke about viscera. It ended as something that resists easy categorisation - part anatomy, part art, part meditation on the improbable fact of being alive. If you have ever looked at your hand and wondered what is happening underneath the skin, this book is for you.It started as a joke. It turned out to be the most serious thing there is. The human body contains approximately 37 trillion cells, all of them working right now, without your permission, without your awareness, without pause.
VISCERA is a book about what is happening inside you.
It is not a textbook. It is not a medical manual. It is an art book that uses the human body as its subject - organ by organ, chapter by chapter - rendered in original dark baroque illustrations in deep gold, crimson, and black, inspired by the great Renaissance anatomists who first dared to look inside and draw what they found.
Thirty-one chapters.
The illustrations are extraordinary.
VISCERA began as a joke about viscera. It ended as something that resists easy categorisation - part anatomy, part art, part meditation on the improbable fact of being alive. If you have ever looked at your hand and wondered what is happening underneath the skin, this book is for you.
It started as a joke. It turned out to be the most serious thing there is.
