8vo. 21cm, first English language edition, (viii), clxxviii, 386; vii, 511; vi, 482; & vii, 574pp., table of roads (Vol. I), mixed bindings: Vol. I & 2 in tree calf with unnamed cloth spines, Vol. 3 in cloth-backed marbled boards, Vol. 4 in cloth-backed original gilt decorated boards (both latter vols. gilt spine titles on leather), spines taped, upper edges to Vol. 3 water-stained, library bookplates, missing both Volume 5 and atlas, a read/working set, as is (gar). ~ First published in France in 1808 and reputed to be very useful to Napoleon in the French invasion of Spain in 1808. This English translation of 1809 coincides with the Brtitish involvement in Spain against the French. The anonymous translator writes " In the translation few liberties have been taken with the original text: some compliments to the reigning family of France , and particularly to Joseph Buonaparte, have been omitted, as too fulsom for an English ear." These volumes have the book plates of the Fraser Institute of Montreal with a presentation plate of the Mercantile Library Association of Montreal.
