In the 1980s David Thomas was an unemployed plumber with a seemingly impossible dream: to become a fashion stylist. He ran away to London, landed a job selling cassettes in Tower Records, spent weekends and evenings washing dishes and working as a lavatory attendant, and every spare moment hammering on the doors of fashion editors until one of them opened a tiny crack. As well as telling the touching and funny story of the “Billy Elliot of fashion’s” bumpy ride to success, Vanity Project examines the fascinating relationship between the fairytale worlds fashion and celebrity. It describes how the discipline of styling has evolved from the 1980s to now, from the streets of London to the red carpets of Hollywood. This story is told largely in the words of those in the front row seats: actors, musicians, designers, photographers, editors, directors, artists, and music business power brokers. In short, people who have shaped popular culture over more than three decades. This beautifully designed book features more than 300 iconic images – photographs, sketches, magazine covers, Polaroids, iPhone snaps, and press cuttings – that illustrate the creative process from the mind of the stylist and the client's brief to the end result. The rich visual archive is brought right up to date with a specially commissioned portfolio of never-before-seen portraits by some of the world's leading contemporary photographers. Vanity Project is a tale of stars, of clothes, and of the skill and sweat that goes into creating those glittering moments on stage and screen. Above all, it’s the story of how, with the right kind of help and belief, one boy’s dream came true. The publisher will donate 10% of the cover price to The Prince’s Trust. The total amount donated to The Prince’s Trust is expected to be £5 per book. The Prince’s Trust is a registered charity incorporated by Royal Charter in England and Wales (1079675) and Scotland (SC041198).
Acerca del autor: David Thomas is considered one of the pioneers of celebrity styling. His client list reads like an encyclopaedia of entertainment, from Bananarama, Boy George, and Lisa Stansfield in the 80s, to Kylie Minogue, Westlife, Robbie Williams, and Sting in the 90s, to 21st century icons like Dr Dre, Harry Connick Jr, Calvin Harris, Britney Spears, and of course, John Legend and Lionel Richie. It was through receiving a grant from The Prince's Trust that David was able to get a start in the world of fashion. With a foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales, introduction by Lionel Richie, afterword by John Legend, and written by Jessica Jones, Vanity Project also includes contributions from: Anna Friel, Anthony Mandler, Bananarama, Boy George, Detmar Blow, Dylan Jones, Eddie Monsoon, Hamish Bowles, Iain R. Webb, Ian Strange, Jake Nava, Jason Arashaben, Jimmy King, John Richmond, Lisa Stansfield, Lynne Franks, Marcus Feehily, Marcy Detroit, Michael Roberts, Nick Carter, Paul Bishop, Paul Smith, Peter Kruder, Philip Treacy, Roger Black, Scott Eblin, Siobhan Fahey, Sonny Takhar, Spice Girls, Terri Carline, Tina Davis, Trudy Bellinger, and Ty Stiklorius.

Condición: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 376 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | In 1988, Dave Thomas was an unemployed plumber in Gloucester with a seemingly impossible dream: to enter the world of fashion. He moved to London, worked weekends as a café dishwasher and evenings as a toilet attendant in a West End nightclub, and in every spare moment he hammered on the doors of fashion editors until one of them finally opened a tiny crack. Thomas seized the chance to be an unpaid dogsbody at Riva magazine, where he worked with legends of style Judy Blame and Isabella Blow and dressed artists like Lisa Stansfield, Boy George, and Kylie Minogue. Soon after, he was hired by Esquire UK and became the youngest fashion editor in the world. He ultimately moved on to edit fashion at Vogue Hommes, Vanity Fair, and Interview, and his work has since been published in a raft of international magazines. In the intervening decades, the business of styling ascended from the pavement to the penthouse. What began as kids playing dress up with ribbons and safety pins evolved into the backbone of a multibillion-dollar style and clothing industry. And Thomas, now one of Hollywood's most successful stylists, rose along with it. Covering more than thirty years of fashion and celebrity, Vanity Project traces the evolution of celebrity styling from the streets of London in the 1980s to the red carpets of Hollywood today. Featuring interviews conducted by Boy George alongside 250 full-color images, the book gives readers a behind-the-curtain look at more than three decades' worth of glamour and tantrums, friendships and rivalries, and the surprisingly hard graft of celebrity styling.
