First thus - a Book Club issue of the first American unexpurgated edition, published by Random House, New York. With detailed Appendices at the beginning of the book describing the American court decision to allow the book to be published in unexpurgated form in the USA: 'The monumental decision of the United States District Court rendered December 6, 1933, by Hon. John M. Woolsey lifting the ban on "Ulysses." plus 'A letter from Mr. Joyce to the publisher, reprinted in this edition by permission of the author.' ***Near fine in emerald-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on a black panel to the spine, with the striking E. McKnight Kauffer stylistic 'JJ' lettering on the front board. The boards are completely clean and unmarked. There is no fading to the gilt titles, nor to the brilliant emerald-green colour of the cloth. Top and tail of spine just slightly creased. Corners sharp. Bottom edge of page block slightly marked. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions or annotations - just a previous owners label at the top corner of the front free endpaper. No strain to the hinges. Endpapers clean. Interior pages clean. No creases or tears to the very thin paper. ***In a very good original printed dustwrapper, designed by E. McKnight Kauffer (as stated on the front flap) - the dustwrapper being unpriced (indicating a book club issue - also indicated by the number 0207 on the spine). The dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just minimal loss at the tail of the spine, not affecting the titles. There is also some general rubbing and creasing to the extremities, and some small loss at the foldover corner tips. There is some rubbing to the surface on the spine. *** 216mm x 148mm. With XVII preliminary pages to the fore, including a two-page preface by Morris L. Ernst dated December 11, 1933, plus 768 pages. ***'Edward McKnight Kauffer (14 Dec 1890 - 22 Oct 1954) was an American artist and graphic designer who lived for much of his life in the United Kingdom. He worked mainly in poster art, but was also active as a painter, book illustrator and theatre designer. Kauffer may be best known for the 140 posters that he produced for London Underground, and later London Transport. The posters span many styles: many show abstract influences, including futurism, cubism, and vorticism; others evoke impressionist influences such as Japanese woodcuts. He created posters for Shell Oil, the Great Western Railway and other commercial clients, and also illustrated books and book covers. He returned to New York City in 1940 at the beginning of the Second World War, and tried to find work in advertising. He struggled in the more competitive atmosphere until he was approached to do a series of posters for American Airlines in 1947, which became his primary client until his death in 1954.' (Wiki) ***'The complete and unabridged text, now corrected and entirely reset. Like the first American edition, published by Random House in 1934, this new edition contains the original foreword by the author, the historic decision by Judge John M. Woolsey whereby the Federal ban on "Ulysses" was finally removed, and a foreword by Morris Ernst.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'A book club issue of the corrected and reset unabridged edition, being the complete and unabridged text of James Joyce's famous modern classic "Ulysses", identical to the standard Random House edition, in nice clean and tight solid condition, with the original McKnight Kauffer dustwrapper. Copies of "Ulysses" from this period in the original dustwrappers are now hard to come by, and it is uncommon to find any of the Random House editions in the UK. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. …
