1968 Presidential candidate George Romney's typescript response to the question, "When did you stop wanting to be President of the United States?" put forth by Harper's Magazine as part of their "unscientific poll of interested parties," published in the March 1975 issue. His typewritten response here is: "I aspired, and though I achieved not, I was satisfied." Added in an editorial hand, "George Romney has no regrets."Very likely a dictated statement, as it is executed on the verso of a piece of standard Harper's Magazine stationery, and is copy-edited in pencil for publication. An interesting footnote in the annals of father-son Presidential politics. The father of former governor of Massachusetts and current Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, George Romney was the governor of Michigan up unti the time of his Presidential bid against Richard Nixon. He lost to Nixon after publicly withdrawing his support for the Vietnam War, infamously explaining: "When I came back from Vietnam [after a 31-day gubenatorial tour] I had just about the greatest brainwashing that anybody can get."Tiny puncture in the upper corner, Near Fine overall.
