About The Book: "Types of Mankind" is a seminal work by Josiah Nott and George Gliddon, published in 1854. It explores human diversity through an ethnological lens, examining ancient monuments, art, and crania to categorize races. The authors argue for the distinctiveness of various races based on geographical, linguistic, and biblical contexts. Their research reflects 19th-century views on race and human development, often supporting then-prevalent theories of racial hierarchy. While influential, the work is criticized today for its pseudoscientific approach and flawed methodology, highlighting the evolution of anthropological perspectives on race and human variation over time. About The Author: Josiah Nott (1804–1873) was an American surgeon and ethnologist who promoted scientific racism and polygenism, influenced by Samuel Morton. He contributed to yellow fever research, asserting racial hierarchies, and used his findings to defend slavery. George Gliddon (1809–1857) was an English-born Egyptologist and U.S. vice-consul in Egypt. He advocated for Egyptian antiquities, co-authored "Crania Aegyptiaca" with Samuel Morton, and popularized Egyptology in the U.S. through lectures, including the "Panorama of the Nile."
