The nephew (and namesake) of General Douglas MacArthur and son-in-law of Vice President Alben Barkley, this U.S. diplomat fought with the French Resistance in World War Two, being held prisoner of war for two years; he served as U.S. Ambassador to Japan (1957-61), Belgium (1961-65), Austria (1967-69) and Iran (1969-72). TNS, 1p, 8" X 10¼", Tokyo, Japan, 1957 September 9. Addressed to Gerald L. Arnholt. Very good. A gracious reply to an autograph request from the newly-appointed ambassador, thanking his correspondent "for your much-too-generous words about me." Bold full signature in blue fountain pen. Descripción Condición: Very good. - 24 words typed on a cream sheet of New York Times letterhead with the newspaper's address printed at the top and Frankel's title "Max Frankel / Editor, Editorial Page" below & to the left. The New York Times watermark appears in the lower right corner of the letterhead. Dated February 5, 1982. Signed "Max Frankel" in black ink. The letterhead is lightly bumped. Folded twice for mailing. Near fine. Frankel writes to Mrs. Robert E. Sherwood, widow of the playwright: "I am, sorry to say, not the author", but as the responsible editor, he thanks her for her kind note.Max Frankel was born in Germany in 1930 and came to the United States in 1940. He spent a long and brilliant career at the New York Times, joining the paper as a full-time reporter in 1952. After the war, he spent some time as a foreign correspondent, then served as chief Washington correspondent and head of the Washington bureau from 1968 to 1971. He was editor of the editorial page from 1977 to 1986 and executive editor of the paper from 1986 to 1994. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for his coverage of Richard Nixon's trip to China. Indeed, after the Chappaquiddic incident, she flew up to Hyannis Port meet with Kennedy and his advisors to type the official statement regarding the event. PROVENANCE: Rowland Evans was a provocative newspaper columnist, commentator and author who antagonized liberal politicians and championed conservative causes. He left Yale and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 during World War II and was discharged in 1944 because of malaria. In 1963, Mr. Evans and Mr. Novak began writing ''Inside Report,'' an insider's view of politics that was published four times a week until Mr. Evans retired in 1993. Mr. Evans and Robert Novak began their work as columnists in the early 1960's, a time when newspaper columnists wielded outsize influence in national politics. The pair pioneered in transferring that influence to the medium of cable television with the political discussion program ''Evans & Novak'' -- carried on CNN from that cable network's beginning. Rowland Evans and his wife Kay (Katherine Winton Evans), also a respected writer and editor, were mainstays on the Washington social scene, hosting many memorable gatherings in their handsome Georgetown house -- to which flocked influential and remarkable people drawn from journalism, politics and general society over the decades from the 1960s to the 2000s. Both Evans and Novak became more predictably conservative over the years, particularly during the Reagan years. Reportedly, both columnists voted for JFK in 1960 and for Lyndon Johnson in 1964. Richard R. Burt (born 1947) is an American businessman and diplomat who served as United States Ambassador to Germany (1985-89) and was a chief negotiator of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. Prior to his diplomatic career, Burt worked as director of an NGO and was a national security correspondent for The New York Times. He served as John McCain's top national security adviser during McCain's 2000 and 2008 Presidential campaigns. Burt claims to have contributed to Trump's first major foreign policy speech, April 27, 2016, at the Mayflower Hotel. In the speech, Trump called for greater cooperation with Russia and encouraged Trump to take a less interventionist approach to foreign affairs. In an April 2019 interview of the Center for the National Interest's Dmitry Simes by Christiane Amanpour, Burt was the top national security adviser to the 2016 Trump campaign. Burt's simultaneous roles as a campaign adviser for Trump and a lobbyist for Russian interests first drew scrutiny in October 2016 following the discredited dossier. Descripción Condición: Good. - Sixteen words typed on a 7-1/4 inch square sheet of his personalized letterhead with his name & address printed in raised lettering at the top. Signed "Channing Pollock". Mounted below the signature is a 3 inch high by 5 inch wide card inscribed and signed "To / Elinor Ann Schloss / with best wishes / Channing Pollock / 1933". The edges of the note are darkened & its bottom left corner is lightly creased. Two small newspaper cuttings - a portrait of the playwright & a 3-line bio - have been glued to the left of the printed address on the letterhead, probably by the recipient. The card is unevenly darkened. On the versos several pieces of tape adhere to the note & card where they have been removed from an album. Good. Pollock writes that he is very glad to send the recipient his autograph and thanks her for wanting it. Channing Pollock [1880-1946] was an American playwright, critic and writer of film scenarios. He began his career in 1896 as drama critic at The Washington Post and later worked at the Washington Times. He was the author of "The House Beautiful", "The Fool", "The Enemy" and many other successful Broadway productions.
