Paperback. "The Two Cities; A Chronicle of Universal History to the Year 1146 A.D." is a monumental work of medieval historiography and philosophy. Written by Otto I, Bishop of Freising, one of the most distinguished historians of the Middle Ages, this chronicle attempts to synthesize the entirety of human history within a profound theological framework. Drawing heavy inspiration from St. Augustine's "The City of God," the work traces the parallel development of the civitas Dei (the heavenly city) and the civitas terrena (the earthly city) from the dawn of creation through the mid-twelfth century.Otto of Freising provides a unique perspective as both a high-ranking churchman and a relative of the Hohenstaufen emperors. His narrative offers invaluable insights into the political and religious tensions of the Holy Roman Empire, the Investiture Controversy, and the intellectual climate of the 12th-century Renaissance. The chronicle is more than a mere record of events; it is a sophisticated meditation on the cyclical nature of empires and the ultimate destiny of mankind. This work remains a cornerstone for scholars of medieval history, offering a rare glimpse into how the medieval mind understood its place in the grand trajectory of time and divine providence. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
