CHAPTER 1
Embrace the New
I returned to work doing the bit of being resilient, taking it all in my stride. I shrugged it off and tried to get on with it, but the dreamlike state returned.
Someone dropped a stone of technology into the pond of human existence and it rippled through every nation on earth. The technology was the power of the computer and the ripples were information.
Information was no longer controlled by a select few, it was free to frighten, inform and inspire. It changed our direction, the way we communicated and the way we did business. Instead of waiting weeks or perhaps months for news suddenly with the new technology we knew in an instant.
It, information was completely different than any other product on the market. There was no item called 'Information' that you could pull out of a box and hold in your hands. There was no eating it, sitting on it or wearing it. The tools and the method of delivery, the computer with a microchip and software had to be setup first then all you could really do with it was look at it, read it and be well informed.
Commercial computing power had been around for a quite a few years but only in research and large corporations. A different breed than what we know today. Most of the time they were big and bulky sometimes taking floors of businesses that managed to own one and far too expensive and impractical for the little guy at home. The microcomputer had become a practical standalone desktop problem solver I could see changing everything we did and I wanted to be a part of it.
I was working as a fire extinguisher serviceman until a work-related accident forced the company to place me in their administration department as a purchasing officer, more on that later. Not being on the road as much presented opportunities to get to know the co- workers and it was then I met a new friend who invited me to his home to see something he owned, a computer. No biggie these days but I had never seen one.
It looked like a small television sitting on a steel box half the size of the desk and he beamed with excitement when he turned it on. This was in the days of DOS before the 'User Interface'.
I heard a couple of beeps followed by quick orange flashes on the screen then all I could see was an orange "C>" in the top left-hand corner. "Pfff" It didn't seem to be all that fantastic so I asked him what I was looking at to which he replied it was the hard-drive.
He saw my expression of enthusiasm change to complete confusion so explained. The hard-drive was like an empty book waiting for you to write, draw or leave a list of instructions in. The things you write can tell the computer to follow a list of instructions or display, print, copy or move your product or information to or from your hard-drive or storage area.
He typed something on the keyboard to display a list containing the files on his hard-drive. He picked up the han
