Print on Demand. This book presents a historical perspective on the transportation of convicts from England to Australia, a practice initiated in the 18th century to alleviate overcrowding in British prisons. The author, drawing upon his own experiences and observations during his 13-year stay in the Australian penal colonies, provides a unique analysis of the system's effectiveness and its impact on both the convicts and the colonies themselves. He discusses the evolution of the system from its inception to its eventual discontinuation, exploring the challenges and controversies it faced along the way. The book sheds light on the lives of transported convicts, the conditions they endured, and the lasting effects their presence had on Australian society and the development of the nation. By examining the successes and failures of the transportation system, the author offers valuable insights into the complexities of punishment, rehabilitation, and social integration. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Reseña del editor
The following work was written at sea, in the course of the Author's last voyage from New South Wales to London, towards the close of the year 1836. Its main object is to point out to His Majesty's government, to members of parliament, and to the British public generally, the absolute necessity of some immediate and extensive change in the regulation and management of the transportation system in the Australian colonies, as also the means of effecting such a change without entailing any additional expense on the mother country, through the judicious application of the land-revenues of these colonies to the purpose for which they were originally destined viz. in promoting an immediate and extensive emigration of virtuous and industrious families and individuals from Great Britain and Ireland to the colonial territories. Such an emigration would prove a seasonable relief at the present moment to those districts of the mother country, of which the inhabitants (as, for instance, those of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland) are at present suffering extreme destitution, from the want of employment and the want of subsistence.
