Paperback. Guidebooks tell you where the Colosseum is. They do not tell you how to avoid a 200 traffic fine on the way there. You ordered a cappuccino at three in the afternoon and the barista paused. You waited forty minutes for a restaurant bill that was never going to arrive, then paid two euros for something called coperto you were fairly sure was a scam. You drove a rental car through a medieval archway in Florence and received a fine in the mail four months later. Nobody was rude. Nobody said a word. And yet you spent two weeks in Italy feeling the room adjust slightly every time you walked in.This is the social code, not the sightseeing list.Written for first-time visitors and anyone who suspects they got it slightly wrong the first time, Don't Be That Tourist: Italy is a cultural cheat sheet. It is thirty-six chapters of unwritten Italian etiquette, dining rules, and transit survival. The Coffee and The Table. Understand the ninety-second choreography of the Italian bar counter, and why your price triples if you sit down. Learn the exact hour the kitchen closes, how to read a menu without over-ordering, and why the bill never comes until you ask. We cover tipping (you mostly don't have to), the rules of aperitivo hour, and how to spot a tourist-trap restaurant from the sidewalk. The Transit and The Fines. Getting around Italy is a dream if you know the system, and an expensive nightmare if you don't. Learn why the train beats the rental car, how to navigate Frecciarossa and Italo, and the regional ticket mistake that costs tourists a 50 fine on the platform. If you must drive, learn how to spot the dreaded ZTL camera zones before they photograph your license plate. The Culture and The Street. Why buongiorno before a question changes how the whole country treats you. What the concept of bella figura asks of your wardrobe (and why athletic wear gets you turned away from churches). Plus, practical street smarts for handling cash, avoiding the six-percent currency trap at the ATM, and outsmarting pickpockets in Rome and Naples. It closes with what you will use on the ground: a one-page blend-in cheat sheet, fifty Italian phrases that actually change how you are treated, emergency scripts, and a regional food guide from the Alps to Sicily.Stop guessing at the rules. Don't just visit. Belong. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. …

Take the train, stamp the ticket, choose euros, and never drive under the arch.
Most of what goes wrong on a first trip to Italy is small, avoidable and expensive. The open regional ticket you didn't stamp: fifty euros. The arch in Florence with a camera on it: around a hundred euros per gate, by post, months later. The machine that offers to charge you in your own currency: six percent of everything. The rental car you didn't need at all.
Don't Be That Tourist: Italy is the practical travel guide to the parts of Italy guidebooks skip: how the country actually works, and how to move through it like someone who has been before.
What you'll learn:
– Italy by train, route by route. Frecciarossa or regionale, which station, when to stamp, what to do when a strike is announced, and the refund you're owed when the train runs late. Six itineraries, Rome–Florence–Venice to Puglia and Sicily, each with the one mistake waiting on it.
– Italy without a car. The base-and-day-trip method, the hill towns with no station, where car-free works and where to rent for exactly one day.
– What a week really costs. Lean, middle and comfortable budgets, car versus train for the classic trip, and where the money leaks.
– Dining like you live there. Meal times, how to order by course and what you can skip, coffee rules, aperitivo, reading a restaurant sign, regional food, coperto and tipping.
– Customs and manners. Greetings, Lei and tu, gestures, dress codes for churches, and the dos and don'ts that mark a visitor in seconds.
– Fines and safety. Every tourist fine in one ledger, the ZTL camera zones, taxis without Uber and the fixed airport fares, and the few places pickpockets actually work.
For travelers who'd rather take it slower, there's an easier-pace version of the car-free plan, plus the station assistance service and the over-sixty train fares.
The back of the book is built to be carried: a one-page cheat sheet, a car-free packing list, sixty-five phrases, emergency scripts, and a region-by-region reference.
Read it on the flight. Use it on the platform. Don't just visit. Belong.
