Puccini's Tosca, retold as a novel. Rome, June 1800: a fervent, jealous opera singer; the painter she loves, who has hidden a fugitive in his chapel; and Baron Scarpia, the chief of police, who will trade the painter's life for a single night with her. Across one afternoon, one evening, and the dawn that follows — a church, a lamplit interrogation, a forged safe-conduct, and a leap from the parapet of the Castel Sant'Angelo — Tosca: An Overture gives the fastest and cruelest of melodramas the inwardness only a novel can hold.

Part of the Overture Series — operas told as novels, written to be read in the weeks before you go, or while the music plays. Paced to Karajan's 1979 recording.
