Críticas: I was moved by your beautifully crafted novel, steeped in tenderness. It kept me engaged with its mixture of awe inspiring description, wit, insight and softness. I loved how packed it was with historical detail and yet it never read like a stuffy account. Seamlessly intertwining fact and fiction - marvellous!! It was great to read such in-depth scrutiny of a subject that hasn't received enough airing. The main characters were so delightfully portrayed, they had my hearts pretty early on. And I wanted to keep reading! I have often discarded novels part way if they are not keeping me entertained, but yours had me on the edge of my seat on several occasions. Quite frankly, I loved it. The characterisation was hearty, meaty and awe inspiring - against all odds, despite the relentless adversity, Faith and Jonas battled on. Never once did the novel become bile - filled or self piteous. Fleming was a great 'die hard protagonist' and towards the end I wanted to boo every time he appeared !!! The relationships between husbands and wives, fathers and sons were tender and heart warming. The nature and surroundings descriptions were spellbinding and a real high point of the novel for me. The food orientated ones made me hungry - and I have never heard so much mention of alcohol - particularly Madeira ! The pace was well-balanced with juxtapositon between Pilgrims, Pertigua, Deptford, Freetown etc. Nothing dragged on, timing was pretty darn perfect! It left me wanting to research the subject in greater detail. --Michelle Diaz - Reader

Sensitively written by an author who is obviously passionate about people and humanity. The characters are so vivid and easy to connect with that everything comes to life. It raises every emotion from anger, disgust to compassion and love. This truly is a life changing read and I believe that it should be taught in schools as part of History. Do not miss it. Roots was American, moving and sensitive but Torrents of Fire is truly British. Enjoy. --Suzannah Leighton
