Print on Demand. This captivating book journeys through the life of Hopkins Toppleton, a man fortunate enough to inherit wealth and the esteemed name of his late father, a renowned attorney. When the prominent law firm bearing the Toppleton name invites Hopkins to become a special partner in their London office, he accepts with alacrity. Despite his lack of legal knowledge, Hopkins anticipates living a life of luxury and leisure abroad, with a handsome salary and minimal work responsibilities. However, he soon discovers that life in London is far from the leisurely existence he envisioned. His luxurious office remains unoccupied, and the firm's clients seem uninterested in seeking his legal counsel. Desperate to avoid the boredom of an empty office, Hopkins turns to the seemingly harmless hobby of collecting antique legal texts. In an ironic twist of fate, this pursuit leads him to encounter a restless spirit, a being who claims to have been unjustly deprived of his body and identity. The spirit implores Hopkins's help in reclaiming his stolen life, revealing that the thief is none other than the man currently living in his body. Together, Hopkins and the spirit embark on a quest to right this grave wrong. Filled with intrigue, humor, and a profound examination of the nature of identity, this extraordinary tale delves into the complexities of human nature and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

In this witty tale, a once‑powerful firm keeps its name even after its leader dies, only to welcome a new, very unlikely partner. A carefree heir named Hopkins Toppleton becomes central to a high‑stakes joke that blends ambition, vanity, and the comic consequences of a life lived between two selves. The clash of a mortal sensibility with a wily supernatural influence drives a romp full of social satire, faux grand events, and unexpected turns.
As the two lives collide, the narrative travels from bustling offices on Broadway to fashionable rooms in London, where money, leisure, and a dash of danger mingle with wit and charm. The tale unfolds through a lively voice that revels in irony, offering humor without sacrificing heart or sense of wonder.
- Follow a contest of wits between a man and the spirit that haunts him.
- Watch social pretenses, clever banter, and surprising reversals play out in two cities.
- Enjoy light, imaginative humor anchored by a brisk, accessible storytelling style.
- Discover a sly, character‑driven fantasy about ambition, identity, and fate.
Ideal for readers who love theater of manners, comic fantasy, and a clever take on office politics and personal reinvention.

Reseña del editor
Nor was this feeling, that with the departure of Toppleton, the illustrious, for other worlds the firm was deprived of a most considerable portion of its Claims to high standing, confined to cavilling outsiders. No one recognized the unhappy state of affairs at the busy Office on Broadway more quickly than did Messrs. Morley, Harkins, Perkins, Mawson, Bronson, Smithers, and Hicks themselves, and at the first meeting of the firm, after the funeral of their dead partner, these gentlemen unani mously resolved'that something must be done.
It was at this meeting that Mr. Hicks suggested that the only course left for the bereaved firm to pursue, if it desired to remain an aggressive force in its chosen profession, was to retain the name of Toppleton at the mast head, and, as Mr. Mawson put it, to bluff it out. Mr. Perkins agreed with Mr. Hicks, and suggested that the only honest way to do this was to induce Mr. Toppleton's only son, known to all - even to the clerks in the Office - as Hoppy, to enter the firm as a full partner.
