This collection of writings from women over 75 living in an independent retirement community offers a wide range of literary expressions from poetry to short stories. It evokes memories of other times and places in the lives of the authors and encourages readers to engage in their own writing. This volume comes from contributions of members of the Writers' Workshop of Country Meadows, Silverdale, Washington. The Writers' Workshop is a real group in a real place. The members of the Workshop are a repository of living history, changing American culture and life styles -- although one of them was raised in pre WWII England and did not arrive in North America until 1953. It is never too late to indulge in self-expression. The ladies' writings will guarantee family members of the future an opportunity to be enriched by their ancestors' unique experiences of the 20th and early 21st centuries.
Acerca del autor: I, Judith Groves, was born and raised on the Jersey Shore in the Red Bank area, but have made my way across the country -- Ohio, Nebraska, Colorado -- until bumping into the Puget Sound of Washington. My husband and I visited 30 countries. Travel foreign and domestic, provides an education not available in a classroom. However, I have spent years in classrooms: BA 1962, Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio; MA 1963 Middlebury College, Vermont in conjunction with Johannes Gutenberg Universitat in Mainz, Germany; MRE (Masters of Religious Education) 1967, Iliff School of Theology, Denver, Colorado. The majority of my professional life was spent working for the military as a civilian Protestant Director of Religious Education at Soldiers' Memorial Chapel on Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado and Director of Protestant and Catholic Faith Formation at Subase Chapel, Naval Submarine Base, Bangor, Silverdale, Washington. I started writing "performance pieces" in Junior High School and continue even today. I define those "pieces" as material to celebrate specific events: parties, promotions, retirement, and appreciation dinners. My role in the Writers' Workshop is to encourage, suggest subjects to write about, evaluate what is written -- and occasionally write examples of varied styles of writing . . . and most recently putting this book together.
