Image measures 21 5/8" x 16 3/8" A scarce and visually compelling example of early 20th-century urban planning, this "Time Zone Map of New York City" illustrates travel times from 14th Street, Manhattan, following the completion of the Dual System expansion. Designed to communicate the reach and efficiency of the city's rapidly growing transit network, the map illustrates time zones accessible for a five-cent fare via subway, elevated, and surface lines. Notably, it incorporates estimated walking distances from transit stops, calculated at three miles per hour, offering a comprehensive view of door-to-door travel. Colored by ten minute time increments, the zones expand in jagged, branching patterns that closely follow transit lines, producing a dynamic and highly irregular geometry. This map was published by the Committee on the City Plan, Board of Estimate and Apportionment in 1916. It is in very good condition and has been archivally preserved with an acid-free lining.
