Paperback. "The Threshold of the Pacific" is an authoritative ethnographic study of the social organization and religious beliefs of the inhabitants of San Cristobal in the Solomon Islands. Written by Dr. C. E. Fox, who spent years immersed in the culture of Melanesia, this work offers an exhaustive documentation of a society at the intersection of tradition and change. The text provides a deep exploration of the community's complex social structures, including its matrilineal clans, kinship systems, and totemic affiliations. Dr. Fox records in meticulous detail the indigenous myths, legends, and ritual practices that define the spiritual life of the islanders. Significant attention is given to the unique burial customs, the art of canoe-building, and the philosophical concepts surrounding the soul and spiritual power. By documenting these traditions from a firsthand perspective, the author provides a vivid portrait of the cultural landscape of the Western Pacific. As a foundational text in the field of cultural anthropology, "The Threshold of the Pacific" remains an invaluable resource for scholars and readers interested in Pacific history, oceanic linguistics, and the preservation of indigenous heritage. Its focus on the nuances of daily life and sacred rituals ensures its place as a classic of early 20th-century social science. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
