For thirty years, Hannah has lived with the memory of the moment her hand almost reached her mother’s.
At fifteen, Hannah survived the flood that killed her mother. She remembers the rain, the rising water, and Maggie reaching toward her. Most of all, she remembers the moment their hands came within three inches of touching.
Then her mother pulled away.
Hannah survived. The question did too.
Now, thirty years later, Hannah has built a life around making sure nothing terrible happens twice. She watches the weather. She plans the safe route. She notices the danger everyone else walks past. And when it comes to her grown daughter, Lou, Hannah’s love can feel an awful lot like refusing to let go.
But Lou is ready for a life of her own.
As mother and daughter struggle over the distance between protecting someone and allowing them to live, another storm begins to rise. Roads disappear beneath muddy water. Familiar ground becomes uncertain. And Hannah is drawn toward a moment that will force her to confront the memory she has carried since she was fifteen.
Because sometimes the question that shapes an entire life can only be answered by standing where someone else once stood.
Three Inches is an emotional novel about mothers and daughters, the weight of a childhood misunderstanding, and the terrible distance between holding on and knowing when love requires something more.
Some questions take a lifetime to answer.
Hannah’s took three inches.
