Oversize sheet music (10 x 13/12 inches) , 6 pages with a beautiful hand-colored aquatint engraving on the front cover. Copyright is clearly marked as 1853. Composed and dedicated to Captain Creighton who commandeered the ship Three Bells, and according to the cover, risked "his own life to save those of his fellow beings." who were aboard the disabled British ship San Francisco. On December 23 and 24, 1853, the San Francisco encountered a mammoth storm off the Atlantic seaboard that rendered her disabled and in jeopardy of sinking. The lives of more than 800 passengers—some 600 of whom were members of the U. S. Army and their families en route to California—were imperiled. The Three Bells stayed with the San Francisco until the arrival of another rescue ship, Captain George C. Stouffer’s Antarctic on January 3rd, and the surviving 150 passengers and crew were rescued and taken to the port of Liverpool. It is curious why this music was copy written in 1853: was it was rushed to press in the U. S. And not carefully proof read? Interestingly, although lithographed by Sarony, Major & Knapp of NYC, the somewhat crude portrait of Creighton appears different from the more detailed portraits in various University collections (most likely because they are later editions? ) .perhaps the music was rushed to press before a better image of Creighton could be obtained. The engraved front cover has a fancy frame with an image of a hand-tinted ship/ocean at the center, plus an image of Creighton and two images of smaller (rescue? ) ships at the top. This is an unusually nice copy with no owner markings, just light foxing to the covers; there's a light dampstain along fore edge. The nice condition can be attributed to the music having been bound into a volume of 1850s sheet music. CONDITION: There is light glue and a few threads/holes along the spine where it had been bound. There is also a small portion of a book seller stamp at the bottom edge. Thankfully, the volume was only VERY slightly trimmed, so the music (and type) is undamaged. Overall VG condition.
