Thinking Machines A Layman's Introduction to Logic, Boolean Algebra, and Computers By Irving Adler Illustrated by Ruth Adler Signet Science Library, P2065 New American Library, New York, 1962 First Printing, February 1962 Cover price 60 cents An excellent near fine copy of this fascinating early popular work on computers, logic and Boolean algebra by Irving Adler, with diagrams and illustrations by Ruth Adler. Published at a time when electronic computing was still a relatively new and mysterious technology, the book provides an accessible introduction to the principles behind calculating machines and electronic computers. The book contains numerous diagrams and illustrations throughout, explaining subjects including binary numbers, logic, Boolean algebra, switching circuits, electronic computers and the relationship between thinking machines and the human brain. This is the Signet Science Library edition, number P2065, with the original 60 cent cover price and stated First Printing, February 1962. CONDITION Near Fine overall. Softcover with only the slightest shelf wear. Pages have light natural yellowing consistent with age. No writing, names, inscriptions or other markings noted. The binding is clean and sound and the book presents very well for its age. A particularly nice copy of an early 1960s popular science book dealing with computers, logic and the emerging technology of electronic "thinking machines." An appealing collectible for anyone interested in early computing history, vintage science books, computer history, mathematics, logic, Boolean algebra or the history of popular science.

Descripción de la tienda

Driven by a lifelong passion for rare books and the stories they carry, I specialize in curating historically significant works that illuminate the evolution of human thought — from early science and natural philosophy to exploration, conservation, and cultural heritage. My interest lies not only in the rarity of the object, but in its ability to teach, inspire, and connect us to the past. My catalog includes antiquarian books, early printed works, manuscripts and treatises from the 18th and 19th centuries, with a focus on natural history, science, exploration, and the preservation of the natural world. I'm especially drawn to works that document the early scientific imagination — from botanical studies and anatomical treatises to philosophical texts that predate modern scientific methods. You’ll also find books and ephemera related to wilderness exploration, wildlife studies, environmental stewardship, and the history of the American landscape, including materials on Southern Americana and the development of the U.S. National Parks. As someone based in Tennessee, I carry a deep respect for the region’s natural and cultural history, often reflected in my selections. I have a particular interest in provenance — volumes with notable ex-libris, inscriptions, marginalia, and ownership histories that offer a second layer of narrative. These marks of human connection and intellectual legacy are, to me, as valuable as the texts themselves. Each book I offer is part of my ongoing education — and my goal is to pass that learning on. Whether you’re a private collector, institutional buyer, or fellow enthusiast, I look forward to helping you discover works that are not only rare, but meaningful.
